If you can’t imagine life without chocolate, you’re lucky you weren’t born before the 16th century. Until then, chocolate only existed as a bitter, foamy drink in Mesoamerica. So how did we get from a bitter beverage to the chocolate bars of today?…

This old lady in my grandma's hometown in El Salvador makes they best chocolate tablets for drinking. We call them "tablia" and boil them to drink. My favorite and something about the freshness of it is something everyone should try.

Great video, thank you! The only thing I would like to say is that in Mexico, we know this Aztec emperor as Moctezuma, with a "c" instead of an "n".

You should start correcting these videos. It has already been proven that cocoa is originally from Ecuador, South America. Ustedes deben de comenzar a corregir estos videos. Ya fue comprobado que el cacao es original de Ecuador, Suramerica.

I heard of a Mayan goddess of chocolate named Ixcacao.
Ancient Mexicans discovered chocolate and vanilla. When the spaniards arrived, they grew obsessed with the Aztecs favored drink — hot chocolate delicately flavored with vanilla and other spices — and they kept it as a jealously guarded secret on their voyage back to Spain. They introduced it to the rest of Europe and kept its origins confidential for about 100 years. Mexicans also discovered/introduced corn, tomatoes, avocados, pumpkins, and many other delicious foods to the world.
