Freedom of speech, expression ‘supposed to be prized’ in US: Columbia student

A Columbia University student spoke to Al Jazeera’s correspondent Teresa Bo outside the campus about the events that led to the latest police incursion. “A lot of students went into Hamilton Hall yesterday and occupied and [renamed] it as Hind’s Hall,” said the student who did not want to be identified by name.

  1. Well America is going down the drain. Same as any other country, freedom of speech is only for certain people and groups. If not worse off than developed countries.

Some of these students studying human rights. At this point universities probably shouldnt have this class on…

  2. I’m sorry, but what they are doing is not freedom of speech nor freedom of assembly and the right to protest. This is a group of students mix with others who are not part of the student body who are just agitators and they need to go. I believe a section should be marked as a protest area and it should be away from the main area so that students can get back-and-forth to classes, and they wanna make sure they got some on their side which I wouldn’t be surprised if they do so this is bullshit

  3. An Iranian rapper is being hung by crane in iran for the song he wrote and these things people are chanting death to America.
All of the them are from foreigner countries with student visa

  4. Them barricading themselves in one of the halls isn’t that hall the property of the college? Also, did classes get moved back online because of these protests? That would be awful

  5. The president of Israel is trying to cover the genocide against Palestinians by accusing US students of being anty Jewish. I see students trying to let the US government know that the US government needs to stop supporting the killing of Palestinians citizens. To stop the killing of innocent children. Sending love and happiness to the students of the universities that are protesting and the Palestinian children ❤️ 💕

  6. Like Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's own right-wing Likud party used a version of the slogan “from the river to the sea” in its platform, as the Associated Press reported. The difference is one is a call for freedom the other is a call to ethnic cleanse the country. You can understand thus by understanding how Palestinians are treated in an Apartheid country

  7. The long arm of zionism is behind this, they have been calling the shots on the political community to stop it, because they know how powerful the student voice is, why do you think Netanyahu interfered with American politics and education? Zionism needs to be visible as well as all dynamics from Israel in the US, this is beyond belief, that this so called democracy is failing our young people, and that means we have sunk extremely low as a country.

  8. Columbia, the weakest form of power, you really are a poor example of what a decent, not even good, University should be……disgraceful Institute…respect your past and your students' legacy. Your formal threats are extremely weak and says everything about this institute and how stupid they are interacting with their community, your own community!!!!
You are using you formal institutional power like a drill master in the army bullying new recruits! Shame on you, this is not normal behaviour from a university and should never be acceptable!

  9. The Columbia University president has been breaking the univ. laws where she needs the vote to bring in nypd. She didn't abide by it the fist time and this time didn't either by calling not only nypd but the special task force🤬 Also having outsiders in there is a lie because even the students with their id cards had trouble getting into the campus!!! All lies the local news media is trying to portray. This is not the end of protests and I stand with each and every university student protesting for what's right✊️

  10. Freedom of speech is an issue between you and the government. Columbia isn't the government. They allow protests at their own choice. And that includes how any protests they permit can be conducted. I doubt taking over buildings and constructing an encampment on the quad is in their list of OKs.

  11. Al Jazeera is misleading again as you always. The first Amendment protects the right of individuals and institutions from government. Not from other individuals and institutions. Your civil disobedience becomes unconstitutional when you violate others’ rights.

  12. I am not from the USA but I knew American people have distinguished in terms of civil rights and humanity. Salute to the students, salute to the bright minds, salute to such a generation

  13. Doesn’t matter if you’re left or right… if you don’t go along with globalist agenda your freedom of speech will be crushed… wake up people!
