How did ancient athletes eat?


In the earliest Olympic Games ate primarily cheese, figs and barley bread.

But that meat became more dominant as the years passed, however only in this very particular way:

Goat meat was eaten by runners.

Wrestlers ate roosters that had survived a cockfight.

Strength athletes ate beef.

The whole idea being the athlete would take on traits…

  1. This is another part of BS story, media push while talking about general condition of population during antiquity and Middle Ages. Back then, people were short, malnourished, affected by discouraging life expectancy.

    To be clear, I'm not saying that there were absolutely no jacked people. They were just super rare.

    So, the next time you watch Troy, or Vikings, remember, that armies and villages full of tall, pumped studs, accompanied by fit, hot ladies, have more to do with the modern day porn industry, rather than the actual historical facts.

  2. This was all before the invention of McDonalds. So that explains the absence of the happymeal which later became a leap in athletic performance
    And was banned shortly after due to creating an unfair advantage with athletes that for religious reasons could only eat whoppers.

  3. They might not have had it perfect but the basic fundamentals were there, especially making a point to eat a large meal and get a long nights rest afterwards
