I just want everyone to know that the vast majority of confederate soldiers did not own slaves and did not have a cotton plantation. The rich aristocracy of the south owned these things , but the poor white backwoods foot soldiers did not. Most of these soldiers , philosophically , were fighting for states rights over an over reaching federal system. Slavery was a side issue for them. They did not want a centralized Washington DC power structure far away making decisions that would supercede local laws.

Finding out their ancestors were not only white but actively involved with the oppressing of their people just ruins their whole world view.
