Why were the sides in the Nigerian Civil War so weird? (Short Animated Documentary)

Nigeria’s civil war in the late 1960s is famous for two things: its brutality and the bizarre sides that the world’s powers took in the conflict. One side was supported by the UK, USA (tacitly), the Soviet Union and Israel whereas the other was supported by France, the People’s Republic of China and also Israel. So what on earth happened? To…

1:00 Nigeria's capital is actually Abuja; Lagos does remain its largest and most important city, but it stopped being the capital in 1991.

Are u okey?…"who Britain clumped nigeria together because it made the map look nicer"..???
Africa was divided like a party cake and divided solely and purely due to political, economical and geological, and with little selfish/personal interest.

    It wasn't a war but a genocide.
A bunch of military officers committed a violent coup, instead of arresting and trying the military officers, the Nigerian Army (Hausa + Yoruba Tribes) began a genocide campaign against the Igbo tribe. They set up road blocks to find and Kill Igbos, they performed raids at the local and international airports to find and kill Igbo travelers! That was what culminated into the so called 'civil war' as the Igbos have to defend themselves!! The ordinary Igbo civilian had absolutely nothing to do with the coup but due became the victim of a hate campaign. After the war, all their assets were seized and they were given #20 (20 pounds). Out of the 20 pounds, they have rebuilt themselves to become the wealthiest tribe per capita in Nigeria.

Nigeria gained independence in 1960 not 1963.
France supported Igbos without military aid. They established what you know today as "Doctors Without Borders" to treat wounded Igbos without actually working against Britain.

Thank you so much for this video, I always thought there something seriously wrong with the support Biafra got, they weren't really supported, those countries were just playing a gamble

2:48 small detail, but the map of the US shown, for some reason, doesn't have the territory acquired in the Gadsden purchase despite the year in context being 1966.

The Igbos dominated the military officer cadres pre-war due to educational advantages. Please note

First there's nothing like Hausa-Fulani. They are separate entities with the Hausas being marginalized and the Fulani being rulers/oppressors
Second, Abuja is the capital of Nigeria since the beginning of the 21st century

They ruined the country because of their gains. Everyone knows putting a bunch of illiterate Muslims in power will ruin a country and that's what happened to Nigeria.

So the US was in support to stop communism, and the USSR was in support to spread communism, but they both supported the same faction. Britain and France were on different sides for the same thing. One faction won the war, Britain and France would either gain or lose each other's oil production. As for China, they didn't have any real political reason other than to establish itself as a world power, but it was just out of spite for the Soviets.
