Why is the US offering Africa seats on the UN Security Council? | The Bottom Line

The US push to create seats for Africa on the UN Security Council – without veto power – is “an insult to 1.4 billion Africans,” argues the former African Union ambassador to the US, Arikana Chihombori-Quao.

Since the creation of the UN in 1945, the Permanent Five (China, Russia, France, UK and US) have retained the right to block any…

  1. India or Brazil deserve a seat. Africans are dictators, if given, they will use this permanent seat as a weapon to terrorize their own respective countries with impunity. I am African and I oppose African membership in the security council

  2. Most of the African leaders are not ready to take a positive stance on the world stage for a better Africa Most of the African leaders are laid back and saying what ever will be will be

  3. The idea is to keep Africa power less on the world stage so don't expect the 5 Permanente members to make it easy for Africa to be a Permanente member on the UN security council Africa needs to unite and stand as one Africa, a united Africa will be the most powerful nation in the world.

  4. AFRIKANS WILL BE DISRESPECTED UNTIL FEDERATION.. Africa's real power is in our Federated Union of Africa. This agenda was sabotaged by USA led invasion of Africa using Obama and Amb. Arikana aided Africom further invasion of Africa. FEDERATION OF AFRICA NOW. Diaspora Chair, Menelik

  5. Because Donald Trump said, we africans countries are shithall, so it doesn't surprise us ,we also have leaders in some africans are like dogs. Us lead them where it wants too.

  6. I believe a much better question to ask is "why should anyone have the power to veto?"

Seriously the UN is a joke why give it any credibility by asking for a seat at the table that has not solved a single issue in its History!

  7. The U.S. offering seats to Africa…? Is the UN a property of the U.S….? Must she decide who sit on the security council….? Why is it that all the other countries are just following the U.S…?

  8. I think it's a prank if this is coming from the US. No one should jubilate over this . What we want I Africa is manage our own resources without any interference of the west

  9. The UNSC as is, is a castration of the UN, a very yesman organisation espousing justice except for the P5s. Not able to hold them to account for crimes and wrongful activities done. The extension of the seat to African countries (with veto power) is a step in the right direction but the step must be further elongated to capture other Asian, South American, Caribbean and Australian (referring to the continental space rather than the country) and North American countries.

India, Canada, Barbados, Jamaica, Venezuela, Bolivia, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Sweden, have a role to play in tempering things in the UNSC.

The group of class prefects so to say must reflect a multipolar world and the veto ability must be shared around to end the perpetuation of an Animal Farm system which allows only for double standards and the world view that some countries will always be above the law and choose their own form of "right and wrong" and the UN can only but throw its face away in resignation
