  1. I understand where she's coming from when she talks about Americans/celebrities basically watering down the meaning by bringing thot culture into this. But her trying to gatekeep Carnival is insane and goes against what Carnival is about. At a certain point black people in Trinidad and Tobago weren't allowed into these galas and masquerade balls because of slavery so at the time they made they own shit for themselves the music has a lot of history behind it as well in terms of slavery

  2. There’s great irony in the cultural appropriation that’s taken place amongst “African American” music even within the diaspora. These are the same people that line up for benefits exclusively meant for AA and now you’re gatekeepers of your music and carnivals! 😂. You can have it!

  3. The fact people are ignorant to the fact “black Americans, and the black Caribbean are the same is disturbing. You do realized we was in the same slave ships dropped of at different places?

  4. Other cultures women don't degrade their men as loudly as black women. We as black people in America or in the Caribbean openly degrade e each other blatantly. It's gotta stop.

  5. Seriously. Culturally you gotta actually look at these other cultures. They do things in some ways smarter than black cultures. They will come to the USA and they get these loans and they will all get a big ass apartment with multiple families. The husbands gonand work while the wives stay home and and mind the kids.

  6. But there are cultural similarities across all countries of the African diaspora tho. Things just get called different. You have jab jab and you have voodoo. We have differences due to where are people are from. We gotta get this bullshit of dividing ourselves up. Its counter productive. Stop feeding the stereotypical narratives and look past it. Im American born with Bajan on my fathers side. Shit gotta stop. Seriously. Stop with the bullshit stereotypical narratives for one. That could help. We have more similarities than what differences we have. Take the time to know more about who your looking at funny. Unity over division.

  7. This is ridiculous they're really up there taking about don't come some place they're not from. Really. Smh this is why we're considered as ignorant people by so many other cultures.

  8. Stop it. Just stop. If India(n) people and Chinese people gatekeep their hair and wigs, ladies would throw a temper tantrum. Everyone can enjoy a culture.

  9. Anyone can come enjoy carnival it is being catered to foreigners but that on us and our capitalist mindset money of culture. Most of the our government dont see the importance of preserving positive culture.

  10. It's sad because this conversation would never need to happen with other people's culture, only a culture that is defined as Black. Every other culture, festival or event is to be respected and gate kept by their people and outsiders can learn and spectate, occasionally well meaning, well educated enthusiast take part…Chinese, Indian, Latino, African, European no upset over gate keeping or a need to be respectful of the history and culture.

  11. YALL are so misinformed it’s sad there are so many college predatory schools here in the states there are so many kids who were skipped there are so many people who contribute to great things behind the scenes my grandma didn’t play with me and I don’t play with those after me get out of NY that. y culture got y’all twisted

  12. Girl why you from the Caribbean in the states? It’s called learning other cultures and you don’t know peoples roots my grandma is Haitian and I don’t even tell people that or really get into who are you to say no one can’t come to carnival?? You don’t own carnival go back to your country if you feel this way especially as a black person from any diaspora IGNORANT

  13. They need to stop worrying about gatekeeping Jamaican culture. Jamaica needs all the tourism it can get You need to worry about the Chinese taking over Jamaica.

  14. They use social media and news feeds to learn about black Americans. How about picking up a book to learn about black American people and who they are? You'll be shocked.

  15. Both groups still hang on too heavily to the colonizers religion (Christianity) and cling to heavy to those idea and use white supremacist talking points when discussing issues they have with each other. Both groups could stand to decolonize their minds!!

  16. 1. My Black American culture doesn't come from Africa nor the Carribean, our Black American culture was created by Black Americans only,,2. We're Black Americans not African Americans. 3. Before any immigrants came to the USA my Black Americans ancestors was inventors/ inventions we have overly 50,000 inventions,my ancestors was the first doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, surgeons etc etc, and our ancestors also built the white house, USA, HBCUS and PWI's as well, so to say that my people are lazy is very disrespectful, and all of this disrespect, jealous and envious are nothing but projections to make themselves feel better, and their homelands looks like a dumpster compare to our inner cities or urban communities. It's nothing but jealousy and also white people don't make anyone think a certain way about other races of people, when you become an adult it's no excuse,y'all want to believe it because it makes y'all feel good, I just want Black Americans that's like minded to come together and that's all…. I have seen and heard so much disrespect online to want us Black Americans to unite with these people. Great convo and keep up the good work guys 👍🏾….
