Why African Gospel Pianists Favor F-Sharp Key???

I’ve observed a strong preference for the key of F-Sharp among gospel pianists in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, and Kenya. I’m curious why it’s become the “national key of Africa.”
Despite the complexity of F-Sharp, which involves a mix of black and white keys and is…

  1. My favorite key is simply the key of C. It's so plane, easy and I feel free when playing with this key. Most especially is the key I learned on and applied my knowledge to the others keys.I also like playing in C# because to me it's like the brother to C and because most keyboardist I have met play in that key. I do try playing in all 12 keys but sometimes it's kind of hard because your basically playing thesame thing but at different points . I really thank those who came up with the transpose function because it's a very useful tool for keyboardist

  2. My top 3 keys are F, C# and F#. I really hate C.😮😔😔😔 Very difficult to play because they are all white. I flow very well on the black keys rather than C.

  3. I play all keys on the piano 🎹, although when it comes to a situation where the bass is not working I play c# or F#.

Most churches in Africa are trying to manage costs by buying only Yamaha PSR 473 thinking it's the best ignoring bass. This is another reason most musicians fail to improve on other keys. It's pathetic!

  4. As a beginner F was my favorite key to play in. Probably because most of the hymns in my church were in some key with flats. F had the least of them so maybe that’s why. Now though, I would say G is my favorite and playing in the band with guitarists playing in #’s are my new thing and I love it. So anything in A, E, D and even B are good for me.

  5. Isaac from Kenya, A,B,D and E for slow kind of songs but when it comes to fast African praises, I shift to F-Major it always works… about F #- when we develop that interest to play keys you learn from someone and that someone does it in F#, shows you in F#, you stand beside them and watch when they are playing and then you copy their runs , that's how you end up in F# and in most cases they don't explore other keys…. I find it hard to play in C even though I know its the whites only..

  6. I'm from Nigeria.
My favorite key is C and it's the easiest key to play.
Pls make most of your tutorials in key C major or you can be breaking it down in the keys most people request for.

  7. I'm from South Africa but my mentor taught me in C but made sure that I know all scales should songs could be in a different key… And to this day I'm forever grateful to be taught by him (he's from Nigeria actually)

  8. I guess F# is popular in Africa, especially Nigeria and other black African countries because most of the church praise music and secular music are very convenient Vocally, and I guess for the piano, it has more black buttons; and most semi advanced piano players love it for that.
Also, in Nigeria and most other black countries that play makossa, highlife and other genres, the keyboard player are mostly Comfortable with F# when they have to split: playing the bass lines on the left hand while they solo with the right, she there is no bass player

  9. F# and B – my least favorites. Of course C, F, G, Eb, Ab and Bb are my favs. I just learned the most challenging song of my career. The song was written in three minor keys. It gave me a run for my money, but well worth it. I will be refreshing myself on those minor scales. 😊 appreciate your work. ❤
