What Is It Like Growing Up in Indonesia? | Michelle

EDIT: To clarify on Michelle’s discussion of islands… Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, & West Papua are major islands in Indonesia. Sulawesi should have been mentioned but was not. Bali was referenced as while it is not a large island, internationally it is a very well known Indonesian island with a lot of cultural significance. To many…

Well for many people who too serious for information she said. Please be patient and look. How young she is. So if about historical. We can assume she not understand and only say what she knew. And for mostly for young people. She will understand about lifestyle where she live. If there are miss. I think we let it slide. Because not many people know about other region lifestyle. At least she knew what food is good. About information that was miss or wrong just let it be. At least she not say something that not good to other people. At least we can let other foreigners to know much more about Indonesia. Not just bali.

It's amazing even as Indonesian, how our ancestors could have the decision to be one nation. To decide to have one language, Bahasa Indonesia, is damn genius idea to start with.

Short review of growing up as a Chindo in Medan

    – Racism is still there but minimal
    – People directly assuming that i'm a "Cina" (meaning Chinese Descent) that I'm rich. I'm well off financially but definitely not on the rich part tho
    – Food is the best & makes neighboring countries food taste so inferior. Toughest rival is Thai food
    – If you have trouble on the street, like accidentally bump into someone, people will be braver to argue with you because you're a "Cina" (again, racism is still there)
    – Police officers will likely ask more money out of you if you violate traffic rules (refer to point number 2)
    – If you happen to own a business, you'll be the first one to be targeted by local punks (again, refer to number 2)

Baby girl, you got the spirit, but you kinda mixed up the information and ended up creating major misinformation. From leaving out Sulawesi, to Dayaks being a majority in Sumatra, there's a LOT of things that should be corrected.
