I would not grind up your pods like that. I would cut them long ways exposing the meat and seeds. 4 to 5 pods to 1 cup of vodka. We use vodka because it's tasteless and odorless and allows the best sweetest vanilla flavor to come through. That's the way we were taught in culinary art school. U can use bourbon or rum but keep in mind it changes the flavor and the flavor of the foods u use it in. I like to strain mine before I place it in bottles. It's nasty to have those floaters and seeds in your recipes. I was a pastry chef for yrs.
