Ukraine’s struggle to find new men for front line | BBC News

Almost two years into Russia’s full-scale invasion, there are no longer volunteers on Ukraine’s front line.

Most of those who wanted to fight at the start of the war are either dead, injured or still stuck at the front waiting to be relieved by new recruits.

Ukraine’s goal of liberating its territory hasn’t changed, but the price it’s…

  1. 0:33 – definitely not like this one. The real impressment gangs have automatic weapons and cover their faces, they don't have chevrons. In Odessa, they are accompanied by civilians ( so-called titushkas ). These gangs kidnap people from the streets and detain them in the buildings of TCC. The police ignore notifications of crime.
The most bewildering part of this is that the government of Ukraine didn't even try to motivate people to join the army ( by increasing the salary or introducing a signing bonus, etc ).
The obligation to serve in the military for everyone is quite… questionable. The term of service for recruits and current soldiers is undefined as well.

All the policemen have waived from the draft for the term of service in the police. They cannot be drafted, unless they volunteer to ( and some of them did ).

At least these factors restrain people from joining the military, you should have highlighted this.

BTW, the restriction to leave the country is not provided by any law. It violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Art. 13 p.2 to be more specific.

    But we will stand.

  2. now that people have gotten to see what its like on the frontlines nobody wants to be in that mess but ukrainians might not have a choice unless they are okay with possibly losing their country abd becoming part of russia. It will either be fight for it or lose it

  3. Какие весёлые лица были у жителей Украины когда страна саботировала мирные переговоры в апреле 2022 года, а сейчас рыдают. "А нас за що" или "за що нас вбиватi"?

  4. CNN, what's up? Did you start telling the truth? A year ago you were saying Ukraine was winning, the Russians were losing and the whole western world was with Ukraine. There is no great idea to help Ukraine. There is only war, business and profit.

  5. People get kidnapped from the streets and tormented until they either sign up the documents that tell they're volunteer or die.
Ukraine signed the ECHR that tells that there should be no discrimination based on the sex of a person. Yet men are forbidden to leave the country and women are still permitted to (but who knows for how long).
People try to escape the country and drown in the river or get caught and sent to prison. Last news report that some people were shot trying to escape. So much for the "fight for our freedom"…
Millions and billions of dollars get stolen, nobody (in the western world) cares. The government pays for the roads, stadiums, flowers in the parks, IT services but not military needs.
All the TV news say everything is fine and blame the ppl who try to avoid mobilization yet some army forces get sent to the Frontline towns to fight to get an order to retreat leaving everything behind a few days later (enemy has 7 times more men and 10 times more artillery shells production then all the Europe combined, while Ukraine 2 years deep into the war still has no production of the artillery shells and the drones).
Everyone who says our government is wrong is considered Russian agent spreading psy-op, just like russians say western world is to blame for everything.
Zelensky's presidential term is about to end and the government says everyone who speaks about it is a russian propagandist.
    And so on.
I never supported Russian aggression and I still don't. But we need the negotiations. Ten millions already left the country. There are 11 millions of people who CAN work (not everyone has an opportunity to) and every day there gets more and more of injured people, old people and less of able-to-work people that are needed to pay taxes to provide a pensions for those who aren't able to work. Are all the help Ukraine got was "free of charge"? How many billions are we in debt? How much will we be able to return with all the money needed to support the people who can't survive on their own and the critical shortages of ppl who can work (that are being kidnapped and sent to the crazy military storms now)?
Hope I won't get caught and sent to prison or the frontline for writing what's on my mind.

P.S.: If you really care about the PEOPLE of Ukraine, please try to do something to open the borders.

Our government already failed us. When they told us there will be no war and people do not need to evacuate from the Russian border. When they told us this will end in 3 weeks and that Russia will run out of rockets to attack. When they spent all the money on anything but our army.

  8. The recruitment squads just drag men off buses ,trains ,trams out of cafés, bars , colleges , there is no issue with recruitment 😂😂😂 .To the last Ukrainian remember 😂😂😂

  9. Major General Lord Chelmsford learned an invaluable lesson on 18th January 1879 – that numeric superiority outweighs technical superiority.

It was such an important lesson that all junior officers should have had it tattooed on the back of their hands.

In Chelmsfords case he thought his 1,827 well trained, disciplined troops armed with the latest Martini Henry breach loading rifles and supported by 7 pounder mountain guns could easily outclass 20,000 Zulu warriors with spears and clubs. At Isandlwanda he found he was wrong and 1,776 of his men lay dead a few hours later.

Thirty five years later the British army learned the need to have that motto tattooed onto the back of hands.

Within a week of mobilisation Germany had 3.8 million men under arms. The British Expeditionary Force had exactly 247,400 men in Europe. They were severely mauled, even though they were a well trained and motivated professional army.

    Still they didn’t learn.

By 1916 they thought a heavy artillery barrage would make up for numeric inferiority. At the Battle of the Somme they found they were wrong again. 57,470 British troops were casualties on the first day of the battle. 19,240 were dead before breakfast. The British opened the battle with a 1.5 million shell barrage. It achieved almost nothing. The entire battle only achieved the capture of 6 miles of land.

Technology did not overcome numeric superiority.

But still the lesson was not learned. In 1917 the British tried using tanks as a force multiplier at Cambrai. 476 tanks roared towards the German lines. In the next 17 days the British suffered 75,681 casualties, including 10,042 dead. There was no victory, in fact the British lost more ground than they took.

Numeric superiority was achieved with the mobilisation of 4.7 million US troops in 1918. Within months the war was over.

And STILL we do not tattoo onto the back of hands “numeric superiority outweighs technical superiority”.

We just keep sending high tech weapons to Ukraine and wonder why they aren’t winning.

  10. And what about the women? Why aren’t they being drafted? They’re able to leave the country, party in nightclubs across Europe and cheat on their husbands and boyfriends behind their backs while men risk getting killed or coming home with no arms or no legs? I’d escape too if I had the chance.
