TWiV 1178: Clinical update with Dr. Daniel Griffin
In his weekly clinical update, Dr. Griffin deep dives into the whooping cough epidemic and bird flu in big cats, and in conjunction with your host Vincent Racaniello discusses the recent case of paralytic poliomyelitis in Israel, measles outbreaks and HHS campaign for vaccine safety campaign before reviewing the recent statistics on SARS-CoV-2…

A Happy, Healthy, and prosperous New Year to you and your families. The specter of another epidemic is horrifying I'm 80+ and remember the epidemic of the late 40's and early 50's . My brother was a CP patient with hydrocephalus and spent a lot of time at the Utica, N.Y. Children's Hospital. I can still remember going to see my brother and passing a ward filled with kids in iron lungs. I also remember our happiness at getting the jab. But then we're a nation of obtuse, incorrigible know-nothings.

All rubbish.!!!!!!!
Thanks!
So sorry .
Read about a YALE School of Medicine study that noticed an mRNA vaccinated person is less likely to have autoimmune problems after COVID infection.
Article written by Isabella Backman
Thanks!
I had a neighbor not able to vaccinate her kids bc of the cost. Covid and flu shouldn't cost so much it could have severe outcomes
The vaccine talk would make a good short for sharing.
I wish everyone could watch videos of children suffering from these diseases because they are too young to get vaccinated, or their parents haven't vaccinated them, or responsible adults have not been vaccinated yet.
My 7 week old niece was one week from being able to get her first vaccine at 8 weeks of age. She caught pertussis + spent over 3 months in the hospital. In the first 24 hours, she had to be resuscitated 75 times. Yes, 7 5. It was so damaging to her poor lungs, she was in the NICU for several months, and then caught RSV and spent an additional month in the hospital. Her mother (of 4), lived in the hospital with her thanks to the Ronald McDonald House room. It was such a frightening experience for their family!
Another family member 45 yrs. old , who didn't think he needed a booster, also caught whooping cough a few years later, and his lungs are still not the same.
5:49. What are the chances whooping cough would explode post vaccination?
Happy Merry, to you both. Thank you for another year of education and stimulation! I love it when Vincent gets passionate and voices the frustration we all feel. I adore Daniel's sly humour combined with his compassion. What a terrific team you are! Over the past several years, the entire team at TWIV has equipped me to have intelligent conversations about viruses, infectious disease, and the mechanism of vaccination. May all who TWIV fare well in the coming years! Big thanks to you all!
re: long covid- Over 10 years ago we new that cortisol levels and hyper-adrenalism was on the rise. New studies know that autonomic nervous system impacts and long covid are attributing to ongoing glandular stress. Like to see a study to correlate people suffering from long covid and previous, early patterns of adrenal stress due to long term lifestyle risk factors with erratic daily routines ( chronic insomnia, poor long-term food choices, and ignorance of binaural rhythms)
Back in the late '80s I was attending a college where a couple of students got measles. I went and. Got myself revaccinated.
You said there was nothing good about winter. You're wrong! Winter kills more mosquitoes than anything else, and mosquitoes are the most lethal animal on the planet for humans. Unfortunately for the most impacted areas, we have a distribution problem with winter that makes solving drug and vaccine distribution issues look like childs play.
I had “Hong Kong” flu back in 1969. Felt horrible and it took a couple of months before I was completely myself again. I was in middle school at the time.
This was very informative. Thanks, guys.
The person question from California definitely has an occupational health risk and use an NIOSH certified fit tested N 95 respirator. Airborne particles could possibly attach to the worker’s cloths and therefore should wear disposable overalls. Wash hands after finishing work shift. Do not eat lunch at dump site.
Happy New Year Vincent and Daniel. And thank you for all you do for Americans and yes, Canadians too.
Whooping cough known as Bordetella Pertussis has an early Catarrhal Phase with Runny Nose sometimes conjunctivitis sometimes cough . it lasts 7 -10 days . If the illness can be picked up and treated in the catarrhal phase the disease severity is significantly less .Diagnosis is by PCR . In an outbreak PCR testing and treatment ought help many .
Yes a trio test would be great if one can afford to purchase it. Unfortunately there are many that cannot. Never miss a Clinical Update. Thank you for all you do to bring the information.
Thank you so much for all the work you do. Here's to a healthy (and hopefully somewhat sane?) 2025.
I was 'inoculated' against anti vaxer 'information' in my first class at secondary school. One girl had a withered leg in a brace. Why? Because she had had polio. I didn't get it, because I was vaccinated.
Happy new year, you guys! And thanks for making some of the most helpful and informative podcasts around.
I hope things get better for you!
If doxycycline works for covid it probably does more than cover symptoms. For one it inhibits metalloproteinases which reduces collagen damage.
Brrrrrr. Yucky cold rain today. 🌧️🌨️☂️
Everyone please support Microbe TV; their information is likely more reliable than your PCP. I'm middle-class in the high-reputed Boston hospital system, which frequently dispenses incorrectly.
DTaP, hello Uncles, Aunts, Grand Parents, neighnors… Check your currency beginning of third trimester,
You have to listen to mothers. Please don’t dismiss them as ignorant. Why is it unacceptable to separate the vaccines. Anti-vaxx is going to get worse unless these people have choices
My grandchild had RSV a year ago, and now again! It came on suddenly while I was visiting her and a week later it started in me. I had the RSV vaccine last year. This is so much worse than bronchitis! Nearly two weeks and I am not over it. I wonder if seniors should get the vaccine every year?
TWiV 1178: Clinical Update with Dr. Daniel Griffin – Key Takeaways
* 5:10 Whooping Cough (Pertussis): Cases have reached their highest level in a decade, with over 32,000 cases reported in the US this year, marking a sixfold increase from the previous year.
* 7:16 Vaccination Timing: The highest burden of pertussis is in infants under six months old, with over 21% of these cases requiring hospitalization. The recommended vaccination schedule (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and acellular Pertussis – DTaP) starts at two months of age to provide early protection.
* 9:41 Polio Case in Israel: A teenager in Israel was diagnosed with polio, highlighting the importance of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) for protection. The case is suspected to be vaccine-derived, as oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) was administered in the region.
* 13:05 HHS "Let's Get Real" Campaign: The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched a campaign to promote childhood vaccinations, emphasizing their safety and effectiveness in preventing serious diseases.
* 19:05 Bird Flu in Big Cats: A concerning outbreak of avian influenza led to the deaths of 20 big cats at a Washington sanctuary, underscoring the potential threat to various animal species.
* 21:32 Respiratory Illnesses: High levels of influenza A, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 are circulating across the US, creating a challenging respiratory illness season.
* 23:54 Influenza Fatality: A study on influenza-associated hospitalizations revealed that 5.5% of hospitalized cases resulted in death, with half of these deaths occurring after hospital discharge, particularly among older patients with underlying conditions.
* 30:47 COVID-19 Vaccines for Children: A study showed that the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine provided strong protection against symptomatic COVID-19 (90% effectiveness) and hospitalization (82% effectiveness) in children aged six months to five years.
* 34:45 COVID-19 Treatments: Treatment options for COVID-19 include Paxlovid (especially for those over 50 or with risk factors), remdesivir, and molnupiravir.
* 36:47 Long COVID: Data from 2023 indicates that 6.4% of US adults reported experiencing long COVID, with significant activity limitations reported in some jurisdictions. Long COVID can manifest with various symptoms, including neuropsychiatric issues and personality changes.
* 41:14 Long COVID Prevention: Vaccination remains a key strategy to prevent long COVID, with studies showing significant effectiveness in reducing the risk among children and adolescents.
* 47:17 H5N1 in Landfills: Concerns were raised about the safety of landfill workers handling bird carcasses infected with H5N1 avian influenza. Wearing N95 masks is recommended due to the potential for aerosolization and prolonged virus survival in cold temperatures.
* 56:24 Polio Vaccination: For individuals who have completed the recommended polio vaccination series, a booster with IPV is only recommended for travel to high-risk areas.
* 59:37 Terminology: There was a call for more specific terminology to distinguish between "poliovirus" and "poliomyelitis" to avoid confusion.

My son got Kawasaki Disease, an autoimmune disease less than 1 week after i was ambushed by the doctors who gave him 5 vaccines at once to start kindergarten. He didn't get to start kindergarten. He was in the hospital. Im not antivax, but letting moms space out the vaccines is not wrong. He's nearly 30 and never had any other autoimmune thing again.
A year later my cousin had polio, als no shots were available then. 79 years ago, what a crazy time nothing was available. I had to leave my carriage for my cousin, she now passed away 2 months ago.
Huge thank you as always. Happy New Year to the whole team including those behind the scenes.
I had whooping cough 80 years ago, no shots were available then.
As I sit waiting for the results of a pertussis test on my child with pneumonia, I decided to listen to this week’s TWIV. And first thing you are talking about is Pertussis!!! Btw, yes my child is fully vaccinated and just had her TDAP booster 1 month ago. She is miserably coughing away. Happy New Year to you both!
Edit to add: she is negative for pertussis per lab work. Just wanted to let you all know!
Can corelate low body thermogenesis with severity of Covid19 ?
Vaccination to prevent Long Covid in children. In the UK, the JCVI & UKHSA do not permit vaccination in kids unless they're considered seriously at risk. For parents it's not even a choice! Insane!!!
Did cold agglutinine play a rol in pathogenesis of micro clotts at lung level ?
Did cryoglobuline IgM high level play a rol in pathogenesis of micro clotts at lung level ?
I love your show. REgarding whooping cough – we got it in Feb, 2020 are we considered protected (vaccinated per se) or can we recatch how likely? I haven't listened as recently as had big health things going on but every time I come back to you – you give me cozy vibes even with the heavy subjects. i remember listening to you so much during the covid days. you were so comforting and I appreciated you all so much. Coming back to your channel – like coming home. weird but true. And as I listen regarding winter – I agree. I always say I like the cold but I don't like being cold in it. … LOVE ANIMALS always have since I was little. Also, my son and my dog just got over a long pneumonia and now my husband has Covid. Sheesh!!
Maybe at Covid19 patients warmed oxigen mix at body temperature can decrease even SARS COV2 replication if SARS COV2 better replicate at very low tissue temperature?
Yesterday China CDC week 51 report:
Covid 1.6%
Influenza 23.1%
RSV 2.3%
