Mmm, I think we need to cut him some slack on this one. The most famous case ( and most hilarious) of this was probably when the Dali Lama of Tibet was being interviewed by William F. Buckley. Buckley noticed that when he would pose a question in English, the Dali would have the question "translated", sometimes into Tibetan and sometimes into different English, and then would answer in English. Finally Buckley asked him about that, then asking "Do you not understand English?" to which the Dali responded, "Yes, I understand English, just not your English." which got a belly laugh from the audience. But then, that was not about accents, but about the wildly obscure vocabulary always Buckley used so, … Never mind, Trump's just an idiot.

Can we have a translation from American into English? Fortunately most of us native English speakers can just about understand American. I just wish they’d claim their language and not confuse it with English. I wouldn’t mind if Trump claimed, Made in America where they don’t use the U in aluminium and they have their own way of skeduling things. (And btw, there’s a T in Scotland, not a D.)

Yeah….. I have a hard time understanding Indian accent as well even though I’ve tried hard to understand and listen attentively; so I get nervous when I need to get on 1:1 business calls with Indians who have a strong accent. If anyone can provide some tips and tricks on how to quickly understand the accent that would be super helpful.
P.s., I always politely ask the person to repeat and blame it on my phone/internet connection.
Talking about accents, President Trump's accent was influenced by his Scottish mother. The narrators squeaky Minnie Mouse accent it very difficult to understand.

English to English translators, reduce the speed SPEED at which words roll outa mouth by ONE TENTH. Slow, drawling and lotsa cartoonish gestures and Americans understand!
As an Indian I can say, yes, natives need translator for "English (indian) to English". Even I didn't understand their question.
But accents of our old politicians or scholars like Indira Gandhi, Nehru, Satyajit Ray, Amartya Sen etc. were familiar to natives.
