How about long-time prisoners like Leonard Peltier or Mumia Abu-Jamal, who have been behind bars for trumped-up or questionable charges and who rarely come up in the corporate media? Or more recent names in political discourse, like Chelsea Manning, Daniel Hale, or Edward Snowden?
If one researches the 1970s and the Civil Rights era, one will likely encounter several prominent black activists. Mike Africa (Sr.), a former member of the 1970s MOVE movement led by John Africa, is one example. Other well-known names of that era, like Martin Sostre, Elmer Pratt, Imari Obadele, Angela Davis, the Wilmington Ten, and many others, could take hours to discuss. One could argue that Martin Luther King was a recurring political prisoner, for although he spent relatively less time behind bars when compared to other prominent political prisoners, he was a frequent target of the authorities—in other words, a marked man. Couldn't the more controversial figures like Susan Rosenburg or her one-time associate, Assata Shakur, or Marcus Garvey, too, be considered political prisoners? Going back even further in time, one encounters Eugene Debs, who ran for president from prison, and Angelo Herndon, who spent time behind bars for his political views. Many more figures are worthy of discussion, should time permit it. The bottom line is that political prisoners are not a rarity or "foreign" to the United States. Simple research would bear this out.

Having an ex-president who was criminal to become president to be voted in again as president, a banana republic, not convicting him for his crimes.
