Tokyo Olympics: Olympic Games at what cost? | To The Point

Just weeks to go now to the beginning of the summer Olympics in Japan. Preparations, though, have been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
And, as many as eighty percent of the Japanese say they want the Olympics called off. But: the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee insist the huge event will go ahead even if there are…

Why is Berlin not showing interest in hosting the Olympics? It has been over 30 yrs since unification, the Olympics would have been the best way to celebrate the city as one. Paris or London would have vied for this worldly games long ago…

Every time a new game is invented at some place of recreation, it is added to the Olympics. If there is a competition at the beach on who can throw a handful of beach sand upwards, towards the sky, that completion is next added by an American president such as Clinton to an ever increasing set of events at the Olympics. If two or more highly bored girls are seen playing a different form of volleyball at the beach by the ocean, that game is immediately added to a growing list of events at the next Olympics by the sitting president of America. If the sitting President of America sees a new game where the football is tossed by a quarterback by throwing the ball backwards without looking at the intended receiver, that sitting president again adds that as a new event to the Olympics. If someone complains to the President that too many events are making the Olympics way too expensive, the sitting president immediately bans the Olympic the athletes of the Russian Federation, even if someone else had complained. If a politician sees a twisted new form of rugby being played by a few amateurs, that is immediately added as an event by the the sitting President most likely.

From what I understand, if the Olympics are cancelled, the host nation will owe a lot of money to the IOC including estimated profits. The IOC could call it off, but there is no financial incentive for the IOC to do so. So in a sense, it would be better to run the Olympics even at a loss because then they will incur real costs which would be far less than the rosy expected revenues. It could be viewed as Tokyo's last ditch effort to save face while sacrificing people's well being. That's far removed from so called Olympic spirit.

Just like we're seeing right now in Tokyo, the one representative obviously missing from this discussion is an epidemiologist – it's appalling that the IOC are being allowed to bully their way into holding the games rather than protecting the health & wellbeing of either their own athletes & entourage or the 126 million people of Japan. Any epidemiologist will tell you the absolute worst situation in a pandemic is to bring people from virtually every continent & country, close them up in a 'bubble' (as they are calling the Olympic village), let the virus mutate into god-knows what new variant(s) and then after it's stewed for a couple of weeks have all those people return to their homeland & spread the new 'IOC Special' variant worldwide!
And to impose this little cauldron upon a country that is densely populated, 80% still unvaccinated, has escalating numbers of infections and a healthcare system that needs all it's capacity to treat it's residents?? IOC = absolutely reprehensible! If it's going to cost billions to postpone or cancel, how about YOU cover it from the billions you've made from televising rights in the last decades??!

The IOC will be the only winner of this Olympic cycle. They're making billions off of TV. Japan cannot recoup any of the money they spent to hold the games, they depend on tourism for that. And the athletes themselves might as well be at a practice session. Who wants to compete in an empty stadium? It doesn't feel like a celebration anymore.

please read using translater tool.

I would call it off too. We can delay gratification. We can also promise the next one to Japan if cancelled.

Their world will Not fall apart. There are more important priorities than vain glory.
If their world will fall apart, I suggest finding more humanitarian pursuits and priorities.

COVID-19 hysteria is based on PCR tests.
    1. PCR tests cannot show the infection.
    2. PCR tests to prove COVID-19 use Ct>28.
    3. Ct=45 (Drosden tests, CDC gold standard): 100% false positives.
    4. Ct=35: 97% false positives.
    5. Ct>28: Returns nonsense results. It's not accepted by serious scientists.

Absolutely to the point – – – where is the wisdom of this decision? It is non-existent. Especially in a country where only 14% of the adult population has been vaccinated for ANY variant of Covid.
This is the rich right making a grab for property from which to profit, at the expense of the citizens of those communities affected by the Olympics' rich representatives' plotting . Shame on the Olympics, moving poor people out of their own homes to tear them down for profit. And not providing a dime in return. This shows where their hearts are coming from.

I am not a Japanese but I was really glad when Tokyo won the bid to host 2020 Olympic Games back in 2013.
I was hoping to see the Games which was meant to be the opportunity for a reboot of Japan.
I am very disappointed that the Olympic Games will not be as expected.

Our government has been ignoring their not only their own people but our emperor too.
On top of that, the head of IOC is looking to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cities experienced nuclear bombs, to satisfy their vain idea of olympic being the symbol of peace, on contrary to their action with is risking not only lives of japans people but entire human being by triggering another wave of Covid.
Even we can’t stop this craziness, the responsibilities of potential outcome has to be pursued internationally to those who said it’s gonna be “Safe”.

I don't think 2020 needs to be the beginning of the end of the Olympics, but I think organizers have to learn from the 2020 games, and not treat what happened as a blip. The Olympics are already gearing towards sustainability, and I think pushing for organizing a flexible, more affordable, and resilient bids to the games will be crucial to attracting countries outside of superpower countries. The German Olympics bid (2032?) spread over many cities is a strong example.
