In the late 90s various companies popped up offering devices for your PC that could emit scents and fragrances into your face. These…

  1. Wow, that is a crazy story. And the idea that the creator of it came close to literally dying from 9/11, then going on to serve as a Ugandan health advisor years later, sounds like something from a novel

  2. I don't think smell-o-vision is a great idea, but I do think it's silly that we don't put more work into the science of smell. We're practically missing a whole dimension not being able to smell things the way a dog can. Imagine a single device that warns you about smoke, CO and other toxic gas (who's to say an e-nose couldn't detect "odorless" things?), expired food, smog, leaky pipes…

Reproducing smells, enhancing our own sense of smell, and machines with noses are all things we should be putting more effort into.

  3. Really interesting story. Even if everything had gone right for DigiScents, I'm guessing iSmell wouldn't have caught on since none of their competitors were successful either.

  4. After watching the entire video… One thought still coming to my mind: If they have put more effort in putting the 64 primes technology in movie theaters, like modern 3D movies, it would have helped to get momentum for the consumer grade device.

  5. I'm surprised you didn't mention South Park's Nosulus Rift! Its a very recent example that actually did work, and a fun little parody at that.

  6. I recall that a few years ago LTT featured a newer company trying to put out a similar product targeted at the VR market to make things more immersive, but I assume that probably fizzled out since VR in general did—but it seems like that sort of thing would be better suited for something in the realm of amusement parks or VR experiences at trade shows, rather than a consumer device that people would purchase for use in the home.

Still, it’s really cool tech that they’ve come up with for combining all those smells into an ambient sensory experience. It would be cool to experience something like that someday, but it’s not the sort of thing that is gonna make anyone money doing it so it would be best left to something like a Disney park where the cost of entry and all the other attractions would subsidize the expense of building out some sort of attraction with it.

  7. Worse than smell'o'vision, at the end this dude talks about digitizing taste. That way they could make completely fake food that tastes good. For a guy with no real social or sex life, that guy is a real asshole.

  8. My biggest fear with such a product is the subscription model, or at least the cost of these oils. Inevitably you'll have to replace them.
