The SWL DXing news report (episode 15): Lifeline for BBC World Service; SW to return to Luxembourg?

In this week’s episode I talk about the DXing programme Wavescan being dropped from AWR programming, a quick end to Poland’s experiment with…

Will Wavescan still have a podcast? I ask that because I listen to Wavescan on Spotify every week and I have seen a new episode since the 19th of October.
The BBC have indeed secured a lifeline but whether or not it is sufficient long term may be debatable. The BBC are having financial difficulties resulting in both job and programme cuts. The Financial Times have an excellent article on this increase in Govt grant. It is reported to be GBP 27 million on top of the base level grant of GBP 104 million. The BBC World Service total budget last year was GBP 369 million. The BBC were looking for more than the GBP 27 million some sources qoting they wanted GBP 100 million. The FT are reporting they were looking for as much as GBP 150 million a year. Hope these numbers help put some light on the issue. Some BBC executives are still warning about the future of the service.
If there's one thing I can't do when viewing your DXing report episode is to fast forward the video. That would like fast forwarding the news on the radio and I would miss every single detail! 📻😎. I can always tell this is a DX'ing news episode when it starts with a few seconds of the song, "Radio Rock". 📻🎸
09:45 AFAIK the BBC has always used 12095 kHz since I restarted my SWL'ing hobby in 2021. Strange that Radio Slovakia and Radio Prague chose this very frequency, when the 20m band allocation is hardly used by broadcasters. 11:29 I've never managed to get Radio Vatican and as for Radio Yemen, it's usually the droning jamming signal from Saudi Arabia.
Keep up the good work, bru! I sincerely hope you won't replace your calm, soothing and educating voice with that of an AI though. 😀
Andre: "And how do you know I'm not already using AI to narrate my podcasts?"
Me: "Goeiste! Wat?"😳
This video series is quickly becoming my go to YT channel for radio related news. Great work!
Wave scan I listen on wwcr good program and they play old programs
Dropping Wavescan is very shortsighted of AWR.
Very good information. But can I have the website you mentioned as I couldn't get it. Keep up your good news and information channel. 73. Paul HS0ZLQ, G0MIH.
It's sad that AWR has decided to stop carrying their long time DX program (10+ years)! Yesterday in North America we changed our clocks 1 hour back so now I'm UTC -7 so it will be interesting to see what I can hear on SW. It will also be intresting to see a station from Luxembourg! I know many people listened to Radio Luxembourg especially in the 80's. This week for me was mostly MW Dxing which sometime I want to go to a local park before sunset to see what I can hear.
I got a SW radio for a Christmas gift in the 1980's Sony ICF 2010. It was fascinating to listen to the Communist block countries broadcasts as their governments fell. I remember listening to Radio Bejing during the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Like in Hungary, radio hosts pleaded for help from the west. After the crackdown, the News about China segment was suspended for several months. I wonder if those radio announcers managed to survive the crackdown.
Radio Romania transmits its Serbian program on 5955 and 5960.
I hear RFI on mentioned frequency in the morning between 5 and 6 AM.
I heard radio Farda yesterday.
I've been getting in Radio France International like nobody's business in the B24 season. Maybe I should learn French 😀
Thanks Andre for another awesome Radio Report….👍!
On the Krakow station AI experiment (?) I believe the management thought they would save money, but retreated behind double speak when their audience revolted. It reminds me of the old BBC program “Yes Minister/late Yes Prime Minister “…sounded just like Sir Humphrey explaining government policy to the Minister who would say “What?”.
Good to see the BBC getting funding but still one day they will restore the North American broadcasting. FM just chops the programming to news only cutting out some of their interesting shows.
Thanks for the DX reception reports in your area of the world!
Go Sun , enjoying the DXing especially on the upper bands which are normally quite which make listening interesting!
73! Have a great day!
KTWR Guam also will be going off the air for good. No dates set yet but sometime in 2025. -73's
Thanks as always, Andre!
Great news the BBC world service has procured more funding. Great video as always Thank you
Thanks for the reports. Best SW info on the interwebs! Concise and to the point.
Good news about BBC WorldService gaining more funding after years of scaling back, it is still a great channel to listen to on D.A.B here in the UK.
I often listen, it still has some good programming.
Thanks for the video Andre 👍
Hi Andre, do you know if LM radio is still broadcasting from their spare 1kW transmitter. I caught them quite clearly from Cape Town during a power outage last night, Not as clear as i would expect from a 50kW transmitter but much clearer than I would have expected from a 1kW transmitter.
For me in the UK most things on the 41 metre band seem to be from China.
