I feel like people forget that a human with a rifle is top of all food chains. Lions have coexisted with humans to a degree for hundreds of thousands of years now. I'm sure they understand in some sense that humans are a VERY risky prey item. People forget what species we're part of. the single most capable and dangerous species on earth. None of the other animals even come close and they know it. The ones who didn't know it were hunted to extinction. Avoiding or ignoring humans is a tried and true survival method for all animals on earth. Including the scary ones.
