Was there in 1972 to 1974 and again in 2011. Not much changed in all those years in terms of how the city looks. In the 70's when I was there, it was thriving city and with the America base at Kagnew, was probably the best posting I ever had. It's too bad it has gone the way it has politically. It was never a dangerous city, in terms of crime.
my school was right across the road from the tank junk yard. Our house was off of Adal St behind the Saint Francis Church. My childhood there was absolutely awesome!
I grew up in Asmara, I miss it so much. It still looks like home to me. I really want to return for a visit!

The walled area next to the tank graveyard, known as Denden Camp was a US Army base from the mid-1950s through the 1970s.
The building at 16:24 was the illustration of the article on Asmara in World Book Encyclopedia before I went there in 1961. Also, there was a bar on the left side where I had coffee prepared just like you had earlier in this clip.

Thank you for going here with positive thoughts and reasons, i saw on this country from a YouTuber who was there to criticise n just discouraging to viewers n not engage well with locals to show the beauty of this country n locals despite the obvious issues. As already said Ethiopia has never had influence over Eritrea the truth is that up until this day America has provided Ethiopia with billions to try and annex Eritrea. Ethiopia is the Israel of Africa.
