    ABSTRACT

The Ugep massacre that took place briefly after the Nigeria civil war (Biafra war) affected the people of Ugep community in several ways such as: The attack lead to destruction of houses, businesses, it brought about scarcity of food items and worst of all; the attack lead to the loss of lives and properties worth millions of naira as at 1975. The study is focused on the following specific objectives; to identify the remote and immediate causes of the Ugep massacre of 1975, to examine the patterns of human rights violation in Ugep massacre, to ascertain the efforts of government in managing the massacre and lastly, to document the effect of the massacre on the socio-economic activities of the people.

The study is anchored on two theories; Anomie theory of Emile Durkheim and Conflict theory of Dahrendorf. The study was carried out in Ugep community in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State. The research is a descriptive cross sectional study. It is purely a qualitative study; in-depth interviews, key informant interviews and focused group discussion are the instrument of data collection. A total of 15 in-depth interviews, seven key informant interviews and two focused group discussion were conducted. The target population of the research includes; people who were of age and could vividly remember the massacre, also, civil servants that were deployed by regional and federal government to Ugep after the attack also formed part of the target population. Finally, Ugep indigenes that have good historical knowledge about the massacre also made-up the population of the study.

On the findings of the study, it was revealed that most of the participants in the interviews (IDI and KII) affirmed that when soldiers were sent to Ugep immediately after Biafra war, Ugep people accommodated them. There is also claim that some soldiers started buying things on credit, some refused to pay their rent as at when due. The death of a known epileptic and drunken soldier is the immediate cause of the massacre. The massacre took place on the 24th of December 1975. On the pattern of the violation, it was disclosed that; people were killed, houses, shops were burnt. Properties and money were looted by these soldiers. The then commanding officer had to confine these soldiers in the barracks; this was as a control measure. Federal government on its own part sent relief materials and paid N1 million to the affected people. Finally, the massacre affected businesses, it lead to scarcity of food items.

The researcher recommends that critical attention should be paid to early warning signals, especially when it involves military personnel. Federal government should create military-civil relations department. The reports of the judiciary panel on Ugep massacre should be made available to the general public. In conclusion, human rights violation which is common social problem that Nigerians have been experiencing since it got her independence; still persist, even in this current democratic dispensation. Federal government should as a matter of deterrence make sure military personnel that are found committing these crimes should not go unpunished.

Key words: Human right violation, patterns, effects, massacre,

  2. I really want us to know this , am not in surport of the killing of these our soldiers but there are things we are not understanding, when ever we r having crisis , these our so call soldiers r always one sided. My question, who mandated them for the first place

  3. Journalism is Nigeria is nonsense investigate properly before taking sides. Have you heard from the people of Okuoma that the people they kill there are goat's? Only Rufai and Oji who are true journalists . The military is also taking the laws to their hands. This should be thoroughly investigated because i strongly believe the hands of this our useless politicians are involved. Tifnubu is not capable of ruling Nigeria bet me in few days time the truth will avail. Abati, you said it all. What is the military doing in a peace talk ? Strictly politics

  4. The one who protect us are killing us and you telling us not to defend ourselves… Fuck injustice and what we have in Nigeria are criminal gangster and not soldiers.

  5. The City that taunt peace will not have it. A whole City is burnt which sent attacks against Love and peace

God bless the United States of Nigeria.
    Amen

    ToLu Emiayo
    This is Love

  6. Ruben why you guys do not react this way when ur soldiers are killed in the North. When your NDA was invaded what did you say, did nigeria react thiis way.Your country nigeria is the only Army in the world that goes around burning its own citizens homes, demolish buildings of her own citizens. Are nigerians ashamd of any corrupt and barbaric behaviour at all. You were questioning Israel last time, u can't question ur own military. Tell me which country in the world that behaves like ur security agencies . Ruben those soldiers are unknown soldiers. You military sre always give harmless people collective punishment.
Those military that bomb civilians last time in Kaduna where aee they. Did your government react , the way they are reacting,. We are the only country in the world that do not place value to human life, is a shame.Nigerian miliatary made the mselves so common by doing police work. Nigeria is the only country in the world that the army is everywhere, in retrieve clothes and money from tailor. Can u imagine that, please let us be ashamed sometimes of our behaviour as nigerians.
Is nigeria in this 5G , or modern 21 st century world. We are becoming more barbaric than the ancient times.

  7. While this is a crime and condemnable,There is trust deficit in our country..lets face it, Nigeria military and police we knw very well, have always abused power , and have not always rid them selves of some of the menace that happens, this is why giving them information, and respect is difficult, do we really need the military, talk more of ranks of such caliber to settle land dispute?.. well may their souls rest in peace.

  8. Tinubu do not condemn the killing of civilians by ur soldiers. Do Tinubu react the same when islamic terrorists ambush his nigerian soldiers. You guys are always bias, hypocrite..
Rufai did ur nigeria provide those who killed nigerian youths on 20/10. Or did nigeria provide those security who killed 14 young men in Imo stste in 2023 or 2022.

  9. Nigeria is a lawless country! The executive, the legislative, and the judicial arms of government are known to exhibit the highest level of lawlessness and corruption. Unfortunately, this rut has trickled down to the ordinary citizens who think and act with the most primitive instincts. When the leaders respect and obey the law, every other person follows.

  10. Abati you’re blowing hot airs Restructure the country and peace will come. The soldiers and Tinubu are quick to born down communities. What have they done to deal with the kidnappers in the north. When it happens in the south the reactionary lazy solders are quick in succession todo damages. Go to Gov. Uzodinma’s home town the place is desolate and occupied by repentant boko haram soldiers. Restructure the country, draw down new constitution if not Nigeria will become Afghanistan

  11. Nigeria has polluted the country with northern solders extract.?When you check those killed must come from the north They’re there for their own interests Make money and don’t give a freak about culture of the residents. That’s all these soldiers do create and erupt crisis and make money. Six miles to my hometown Hausa soldiers have sacked the whole community and dance around drink and celebrate. Why on earth do you bring people that don’t know the culture of a people to police them. You can’t get peace in Nigeria until you restructure. All the oil well in Nigeria are owned by northerners that has nothing to do with give rather fight against restructuring

  12. When people Don’t value the institution that protects them, you know that Nation Is Doomed .
If Nigeria Armed forces are fully protected ,fully funded and well paid,We will Not have such incident. Trust me.
May All The Departed Souls From Both Sides Rest In Perfect Peace ☮️✌🏿 .

  13. The same thing is happening in Benin-city in a community called Eke-Oroma and Amagba. Obaseki is even aiding and abetting Amagba and the Oba of Benin is quiet about it as if he is not aware.

  14. My People 🤔Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes don’t Resist them, that only create sorrow, let reality be reality, let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.
God Bless Nigeria And The People Living In IT🙏🏾

  15. ….as usual from the Lawless Animal Husbandry. The country never disappoints in its lawlessness, recklessness and senselessness. The Animal Society of Nigeria ought to be the wealthiest society in Nigeria.
This is what we gonna bequeath our kids. What a Country !

  16. Dr Abati even though the police was sent to that community will they not be murdered as well?. They are still human beings. In fact it will have been the worse. It doesn't matter who went in to secure peace.

  17. Land dispute, the community knows those who originally own that land and in such case, the government must step in and take it over. now blood has been spilled and everybody don run leave the same land. Nigerians will never learn

  18. Sad for these soldiers and their families! That's horrible the way these soldiers died!

Tinubu is not a president of everyone because he's not legitimate!
Tinubu is for a few people, not the majority whatsoever!
    Want some solutions?:
    1.Tinubu should not run again
    2. Cut the salaries of the Senators and the House of Dis-assemblies to 40%.
    3. Use the money to recruit more soldiers and pay them well.
    4. Your law makers should get limited security personals because if they did their job accordingly, you won't have these problems.
Cut back in this Tinubu government officials wastes.
This old man Tinubu is not fit at this period of technology to rule a young country!

  19. All these started from condoling cultism in our Universities and those in government were once cultist and now they still use those guys during election by giving them weapons and money.
The level of heartlessness in Nigeria as of now should be able to keep us all awake. Trouble dey.
