The Interpreter: A king’s messenger in Ghana | Africa Direct Documentary
The traditional role of a king’s interpreter and messenger involves diplomacy, sensitivity and, most of all, trust.
In Asamankese, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Okyeame Anim is the interpreter and messenger for the king of the Akyem Abuakwa kingdom. He speaks on behalf of the ruler of one of the largest clans in Ghana, acting as mediator in…

Piaww ✌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾✊🏾
The man is a linguist and not an interpreter
Great documentary though 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 I loved it.
Linguist
"Odwan" is translated into English as sheep 🐑 not goat. In Akan society, sheep is the desired animal for pacification. Goats are a no no in this regard.
As for Okyeame, it is an Akan concept with no comparable one in English society. So there is no exact word which defines or describes it. Whether linguist or interpreter, both passes.
Is electricity is present in Asamankese Ghana ?
Eggs and local gin Buh not bible
An Okyeame cannot be translated as Interpreter. But hey, this is the downside of having to make sense of one's culture using another's. I am so glad he chose to speak Twi. Thanks so much for sharing.
He is not a King’s messenger but his spokesman
The document is meant to portray ideology of current Ghana president and family
Kyeame is not a an interpreter but a Counsellor at the Chief"s Court and a diplomat. He performs duties of summarising that is misconstrued as interpretation.
Proud to be Ghanaian 🇬🇭
Sometimes i wish GOD added an immediate switch to our lives, where we quickly switch from current states to pressumed state!!!
What at all has tradition done for humanity!!!
Admire that which positively impact the world and humanity.
This is beautiful
Our tradition ❤❤❤ 🇬🇭
Reading the comments, a lot of people are sensitive about everything. 🤦🏿♂️
All ASASCO Alums and current students , let’s gather here ❤
I went to school at Asamankese Secondary School (ASASCO). Great times for real
Asamankese to the whole world
Quite educative
Those who are saying there's no King in Ghana are clueless
There is a difference between a King or a Queen who rules the WHOLE country such as England,Netherlands, Spain, Morocco and other countries,so per our constitution there is no King who has dominion over the WHOLE country but there are Kings such as Okyehene,Ga Mantse, Asantehene,Yaa Naa and other who have total authority over their subjects.
Good video about Africa ancestry and culture
Nice documentary.. In Ghanaian culture though, we do not refer to these people as interpreters but as linguists. It would be nice if the title of your documentary could be modified to reflect the accepted terminology used for them. Thanks
There's no king in Ghana we have paramount chiefs for various tribes we have PRESIDENT who control the affairs of the state together with parliament and judiciary
Uneducated villager. There is NO KING in the REPUBLIC OF GHANA. There are PARAMOUNT CHIEFS.
African culturbis eich and beautiful 🌍🇬🇭🇯🇲🌍
Well done @ALJAZEERA
GREAT DOCUMENTARY
A bible? And I see something similar like being in a box at the court house. Foreign influence, dominating customs and traditions?
He didn’t wear his seatbelt 😂😂😂
We are told there’s no one as Okyehene, why do you keep repeating this misinformation. It’s Akyem Abuakwa Chief.
Great documentary.. kudos 😮..
Okyeman yɛn hwɛ mane sɛe.
Wow this is my Home Town❤️
This is wholesome. Let’s uphold our tradition system of governance devoid of foreign influence. It’s one and only true way we Ghanaians and Africans can develop and build our nation. Kudos to the Okyeame, your role is undisputed
Interesting documentary
IF IT WAS A BIBLE USED AT THE KING"S COURT THEN THESE PEOPLE HAVE REALLY LOST THEIR TRADITIONAL VALUES. WHAT!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? CHRISTIANITY IS NOT PART OF OUR CULTURE, IT IS NOT PART OF OUR AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION. MINISTERS AND PRESIDENTS STEAL OUR MONEY BY SWEARING ON THE BIBLE WHICH DOES NOTHING TO THEM. TO SEE A BIBLE IN THE CHIEF'S PALACE IS A BIG DISGRACE!!!
Contrary to believes Africans had structures and governance long before foreigners arrived, that is a good old fashion Public relation officer /communicator aka linguist..
