My aircrew and I were based there for a month in 1994 flying into Makele, Ethiopia.
During that time we met two young American divers who sought to obtain tropical fish collecting permits.
We met them at our hotel, the Ali Sabieh, and invited them to fly with us to Makele.
TOTALLY off the tourist routes. They happily accepted, and loved the trip.
They then took us diving in the Gulf of Tadjoure.
I was an experienced diver having have dived the western Bahamas, the Florida Keys and Cozumel.
Those reefs we saw that day, and the Marine life there were beautiful beyond description.
It was an unforgettable dive of a lifetime.
