  1. I’m a bit late to the party but wanted to leave my comment regarding the call ups and being picked for the team. A player never assumes they’re going to make the squad for certain games or tours. We have so much talent in SA rugby that we have multiple players who can be picked for the same position, it all just depends on who the opposition is as to who is picked. International games are big events and aren’t played as often as one would think but there are many club competitions and each player will have their club that they’re contracted to, just like in the NFL. So whereas football players only play for their NFL team and their big competition finale is the superbowl, rugby players play within their clubs and in various competitions throughout the year and then the best players will get selected and play in international games. Hope this makes sense.

  2. Watching this and hearing Polly talking about how easily a career can end and knowing his retirement is around the corner is sad.

    But we've got Sacha on the way. And given time and experience he might be the next "liefling".

    A little backstory on "liefling". It started out at the Blue Bulls (provincial team), that everytime a certain kicker stepped up to take his kick, the stadium would start to sing the song "liefling". The words roughly translates to Darling, you know that without i cannot keep living. And so The titel of (the blue bull's home stadium) "Loftus se liefling" was born. Roughly translates to the Darling of Loftus.

    Since then whenever SA has a phenomenal kicker they are reffered to as the Liefling or Darling.

    Unfortunately the tradition has somewhat faded as the original singer of the song has made quite a few racist remarks. I just hope that the song and the title of liefling can transcend the connection to the singer.

  3. I’ll sum it all up for you as I have over 3 decades of watching the Springboks play and have met many of them personally. Rugby is like a Religion in 🇿🇦! It brings our country together in times when we all feel separated and against one another for what happened in the history of our country (Apartheid) if there is ever a country dealing with racism on a daily it is South Africa. But THE WHOLE NATION comes together whenever we see our boys on the field giving it their all and more! It gives the country hope for a better future one where we all can stand together and GROW AND WIN AS A NATION! Rassie the coach of the Boks once climbed to the roof of the stadium to get a better angle of the game from a bird's eye view (the team was not doing so well and was behind on points). Used the radio to send messages with instructions to the players and THEY WON THE GAME! Crazy stuff! I WHOLEHEARTEDLY BELIEVE THAT RUGBY IS THE BEST SPORT IN THE WORLD!

  4. Hi guys I'm fine this guy is lukhanyo nickname is (Maphimpi) meaning is cheater, fastest animal,u know want last of last week his Wife she gotta a bby girl this story was pain full ❤❤❤❤ I'm in South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 the strangle of black people is painful but we thank God of Mandela ND his wife Winnie Mandela to shape this Country god bless u guy's ND ur family ♥️❤️

  5. Guys, this is not like football or any other team. This is international competitions. These guys play for teams, like your NFL. These would be franchise or provincial teams. This is like your Olympic basketball team. They play in the NBA, but have to get selected for the national team. The Springboks are the South African national team, not franchise rugby.
    Most of these players have contracts like your NFL or NBA teams have

  6. on selection;
    remember the Springboks are the national team, apart from that there's a much larger pool of players who play for several clubs in the country in the national leagues and tournaments. Aside from that the best players in a particular country could be contracted and drafted to foreign clubs in other continents and the national (Springbok) coach has that whole wider pool to select players from and then you have injuries, whether those players playing overseas are playing in their club season right now or not etc.

    The international team is selected continuously and usually based on people who've trained with the Springbok team, but in South Africa EVERYBODY who plays rugby wants to play for the Springboks, guarenteed and the route to the Springbok team is widely known; from schools and clubs to university teams to provincial clubs up to superrugby clubs or URC clubs

  7. The sad part is ordinary South Africans can't watch this documentary because its on pay TV not the national broadcaster. Most of us only know the clips on YouTube

  8. Rugby is what south africa is it brings its people together its only the political parties that still sees colour… Mapimpi has a whole south africa behind him and we are his family

  9. So you guys asked about what happened if you don’t get selected in the team. They head back to the previous club they were playing for or sign a new contract with a provincial club or league club. Also players do kinda get drafted between league clubs but more like FIFA. when it comes to International games they have to be selected through a training camp where the national head coach makes the selection of the best national players to represent the springboks. Hope this makes sense 😅🙏🏼

  10. Not sure if anyone answered this yet but unlike the NFL. The players are selected from each club to play for the country. It like a all star team in the NBA. Since we play club rugby which is like Cities against each other. Then if you get selected for the springboks you play against France, Canada, Australia, England. The USA has only played in one world cup so far.

  11. I know you reacted to the is awhile ago. I just want to thank you for really diving in to our story. These rugby players are not just players to us. These are our heroes. These are the people we look up to. We love them! They unite all of us like nobody ever could❤️❤️🇿🇦
