Ditched a 3 wood ages ago and now carry a 5 and 7
29 handicap using a 3-wood. You would be better advising a 7-wood.
Another high quality video Dan.
You are so consistent with all your videos, surely one of the very best golf channels on YT.
Keep up the great work.
My own thoughts are that most golfers above 15 handicap would be better off not having a three wood, They would get more consistent results from a Five wood. Better launch, and better carry. (especially for parkland courses) Just a thought.
I am really surprised the Titleist GTs didn't get a mention here.
I put the Qi10 5w/7w in my bag in June. Running at 8.7 hcp on the last game Oct 10th when i finished the 24 season. Play what you like.
Hi Dan good to see you at Newquay again,Ive put a ping g430 7 wood in the bag I play off 4.8 but don't swing as fast as I used to must be getting old lol but love it,I get plenty of height with it and is easy to hit definitely worth a try for anyone 👍
I have a 13 handicap, use a PING 5 wood. Moved out of PING G410 3 wood.
I play off between 6.3 to 7.1. I love Cobra Fairway Woods. I have Radspeed 5 wood and LTDX 7 wood. It is all about what gives you the most confidence over the ball.
Hardest club to hit off the deck I never carried one for that reason until I came across a Taylor made r11 it came in a job lot off eBay I thought I’d give a try wasn’t even gonna hit it but so glad I did it’s a cannon off tee or deck it’s probably 10 years old and looks terrible but won’t be taking it out the bag anytime soon
To be honest Dan if I was getting 150 yards out of my Ping 3 wood playing of 8 to 15 handicap I’d seriously think about giving golf up 😢👍🏴
Hi Dan, Surprised that you did not select a Titleist in any of the categories. I use a TSR fairway as a 10 handicapper and it is a bomb and bullet straight too
Good timing. Looking just now to switch my son’s fairway wood.
Interesting video. Think fitting is key as handicap doesn't tell the whole story. I hit 3 wood like 5 handicapper off the deck but chip like a novice lol. Come on 50k!!!
10 hc ping g400
I play a G430 Max 3 & 5 woods. Deciding on my gapping I don’t always carry the 5. I can always adjust the lofts to gap them. I am carrying a Mizuno ST Max 7 wood that I don’t think I’ve ever hit a bad shot with. I’m around a 5-6 handicap, but I don’t concern myself with what’s supposed to be the right club for a certain range. I use what works for me the best.
I am mid handicapper and have the Mizuno ST Z 1, 3 & 5 and not at all surprised it was a Mizuno at number one. I think they could have filled other spots in your league table. However, my frustration is I was playing four old Yonex woods, 1, 3, 5 & 7 and though I am happy I replaced them with Mizuno, they don’t produce a 7 wood . (Nor do a number of other manufacturers.) I don’t want to go to a 22 degree hybrid as it leaves me with an imbalance in my gapping but there’s no option that’s viable to me. I looked at putting a 3 iron back in my bag in place of a 7 wood but it comes in more shallow increasing the roll out on landing . Also a 3 iron is often not available in new iron sets as many now start at a 4 or even a 5.
Pretty happy with my XXIO 3 and 5 wood. I get about 205-215 from my 5 and around 215-230 with my 3 wood off the deck.
I’m a10hcp there is no way playing a ping 🤮
Love my AI Smoke, great off the deck – get really good height and distance
Love a gear review Dan! Currently gaming a Ping G400 5 wood. Do you think there's anything a bit more current that might be an improvement? Playing off 9 but swing speed is on the moderate side!
Toying with the idea of a 3 wood hate my 2 iron now 😂😂😂
Great video Dan,I'm off 5 ,I play the stz mizuno 5 wood notched down to 16 degrees,it's a high bomber
Dan, what swing speed would you think is the cutoff for using a 3 wood for us older and slower swingers? I have found my 3 wood only goes 5 -10 yards further than my 5 wood and is much harder to hit well vs my 5 wood which is dead easy to hit well from almost all lies.
Fun video. Mizuno fairway woods are underrated for sure. The original St-Z 3 & 5 are my trusties.
I guess there's an optimum launch and spin profile to meet each individual golfer's delivery and objectives.
Hey Dan – great video, very informative as always.
I have literally just got in from a fitting.
57 yo with HCI of 4.8 but have been struggling with distance these past 3/4 months.
Gone with Mizuno 245 Irons ( previously Callaway Apex19 pro)
Lost total confidence when 7 iron dropped off from a 162 carry to around 150.
New irons averaging carry on 7 iron of 167!
Just also got the Ping G 430 5 wood and it is amazing , around 219 average carry.
Sorry .. my point being …. Getting fitted is so important and the combo of shaft/ head is so vast now there’s something out there for everyone’s game👍
I would have expected a 5w advice for 29+ hcp. I play off 14 and still prefer it to a 3w. Mizuno St max, lovely and forgiving
Recently added a great TM Mini driver to fill a long empty 14 spot. Now I’m tweaking that spot between the mini and 7 wood. This video is great timing for me.
G’Day Dan, my go-to is the RBZ 3 HL 17 degs , RBZ 5W 19 degs , RBZ 7W 21 degs & wait for it RBZ 9W 24 degs….great video…all good mate.
Nice review Dan. My Ping G425 is a lovely club 👍
Unless you have real speed, decent technique golfers should not be playing a 3w.
The average golfer will be better off with a 5w
Nice video Dan. The Mizuno surprised me as well as tge Cleveland. This is where a good fitter helps. Cheers.
Thoughts on where Darkspeed sits?
I would presume someone in the 29+ handicap bracket would be just starting out in the game and would probably be better looking into the second hand market, Ping G400 SFT maybe rather than a £300 + club.
Love the content Dan, any chance of a similar version but for those of us on a budget? And I mean less than £100 for a new fairway
Nice vid Dan. I'm in the 8-15 range and I'm still using a titleist 913 fd 3 wood which I've set to 16°. Love the club although I might only use it once in a round. That's the main reason I haven't changed as paying out a good couple of hundred quid for a new wood that might only be used every now and then is just out of the question. Keep up the good work
That Cleveland sounds terrible. Like tin
I use the Cleveland halo xl love the club and have never really thought about noise level least of my worries
