I worked in Malabo and Bata on and off for about 2 year. One thing I can say with certainty is that the idea that this place will ever be a tourist destination is a complete joke. Tragically this country is run by a family with below average intelligence and above average thuggery. Let me give an example; the ruling thug has struck a deal with the the Chinese to build “apartment” complexes in exchange for allowing the countries timber to be decimated essentially using Chinese slave labor. (Google Chinese worker revolt in EG) Additionally while I was in country no apartment was occupied. They were also built extremely poorly. I’m talking 10-15 story buildings with maybe 4 vertical #3 or #4 rebar with stirrups about every two feet! Cold joints EVERYWHERE!!! No QC testing on concrete or foundations!!!! NONE!!!,! The president spent 100s of millions of dollars building villas for the leaders of all the African countries to have the African conference outside of Bata. I believe they were used once in ten years, the president has built major European or American type highways that actually have toll gates!! Why? I actually came across a Grazi steak house and stopped in for lunch with my guys. The staff were mostly Brazilians that were flown in every couple of months and rotated out regularly. I asked the server WTF! He said the president or his family likes having a churrascaria occasionally and they are willing to pay! I could go on and on and on and on and on about this president building modern buildings and a new capital using mostly Lebanese and Egyptian contractors as well as chines and the construction engineering and methods are exceptionally poor. Last thing I’ll say is when I was there a Coca Cola cost 5 usd. EVERYTHING was expensive as fuck, presumably because all companies in EG have to kick back to the leaders family. . It’s a real shame what’s going on in EG. I found that the actual citizens were mostly warm people begging or desperate for opportunity. On my jobs I actually had guys pouring concrete who had well above average IQ and hard workers. Men that in any other nation likely would have been very successful entrepreneurs however in EG under the current leaders uncle of you wore glasses you’d be at risk of being executed in the stadium in Bata during mass executions while listening to the theme music of Mary Poppins. Google it if you don’t believe me

A lot of countries were not able to recover because of European exploitation from the past. But karma is going back to Europe now. Those countries that cannot rise up from poverty are instead having their people escape to Europe. So Europe now has refugee crisis. Europe prospered while most of the countries that they exploited cannot rise up. So they went to Europe instead and Europe has no choice but to accommodate them.
