Stifling the internet: Authorities in Africa 'deliberately stopping access'


In 2023, there was a record number of internet shutdowns across Africa.
That’s according to the internet rights group, Access Now.
The organisation says authorities deliberately interrupted web access at least 283 times in 39 African countries.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

The comfort zone and fear of losing power are two main reasons to block Internet literacy in africa. Poor cyber knowledge and lack of freedom of speech are among others

Je lui souhaite également un succès international dans sa brillante carrière de journaliste indépendantiste, où il dirige et produit des informations très influentes. Je crois que mon frère, que j'admire pour ses efforts pour rester indépendant, parviendra à une bien meilleure situation en protégeant les intérêts du peuple sénégalais sans s'écarter de la vérité et de l'honnêteté. Je souhaite le voir davantage dans la presse internationale. Je tiens à remercier la chaîne Al Jazeera d'avoir reconnu un véritable talent à cet égard et de lui en avoir offert l'opportunité. Je constate qu'il continue d'exprimer les faits sans renoncer à sa position d'opposition, pour laquelle il a payé un lourd tribut dans le passé.

This is ironic coming from Al Jazeera. Qatar blocks all VoIP services like Whatsapp, Viber and Skype by default. You can't use these services without a VPN there.
