Starlink Gen3 In-Depth Setup and Review

Starlink Gen 3 has arrived, and it’s the latest version of SpaceX’s satellite internet technology. If you’re wondering what’s new with this third-generation dish and router, and whether it’s worth the upgrade, you’re in the right place! But is Starlink the right choice for you? And if you already have a previous generation Starlink dish, is…

  1. Wow. Best videos anywhere on any subject. Understandable at 1.5x speed. Looking for Mini vs Gen3 and Mini Roam plan vs Mobile-Regional for van life "portable" — aka not-in-motion — professional use: video calling 6 hours per day. Can't figure out whether power consumption of Gen3 is dealbreaker for my 180 Ah 12V battery system. In Colo we get sunshine and I'm less worried. Traveling from Nova Scotia to Thunder Bay… worried. Ultimately decision comes down to reliable data. Consensus is bigger dish = robustness under adverse conditions such as marginal obstructions and weather. What say ye? PS is snow melt mode required always in frigid conditions, or just literally for melting snow and ice? Thanks!

  2. I'm poor with maths. If I have a single 90AH battery and have no other demand, I can surf 14 hr/day. I thought I read 75W was nominal and draw is near that steep only upon startup signal acquisition and snowmelt mode. Typical avg = 50 W by consensus. In any case I guess YMMV

  3. Hi, I am a student from Bangladesh. The students there are in a very bad situation for some time. 1000+ students were killed because they spoke for their rights. You can see the news about the brutal attack on the students. It was all a pre-planned and political attack. But when the students started protesting for their rights, and the government failed to prevent it, all the servers of the network were shut down in the whole country, so that the news would not spread among people or other countries. All sim networks and broadband were off for about 6 days. During those 6 days students were killed continuously. So we just want a stable network connection that will always stay connected in any situation. Please Inform us if you can cooperate. Then we will be obstructed to you.
    Thank you.

  4. Loved your review. But let us clarify something. When you do "BYPASS" mode, you said "turns off your WiFi".

It sounds to me they refer to BRIDGE MODE. It basically stops dynamically assigning IP addresses (wired, wifi off), therefore you need a router to do that. Did you test this?

  5. Can anyone answer my question, what do you actually pay for monthly charges? $120 a month, are there taxes and fees added to that or is it a straight $120.

  6. Did you say 30 bucks for 400Mbps on T Mobile? Yo! That's Crazy. In Kenya, that gets you 40Mbps, indeed i live in a developing Country. 400Mbps! Still can't wrap my head around that Speed

  7. So if you’re just using Starlink as your WAN (I already have a mesh system set up and it’s great) do you have to go through the Starlink WiFi setup at all?
Can you just go straight to bypass mode from the app?
I just ordered Gen 3 system. I’m in the mountains and am tired of crappy over the air “broadband”
    Thanks.

  8. Please somebody help me. I’m using this at work since phone is awful. We are trying to mount it on a completely flat roof but can’t find any mounts that would allow the Starlink to angle. Ir needs to be heavy to hold the Starlink down without screw it in

  9. I respect your thoughts in the past.. even you promoted ubiquity..your knowledge of networking was great … starlink is way below your knowledge and capabilities… not a fan anymore… enjoy your corporate paychecks

  10. Have you or do you plan to test the Gen3 mini dish? Also, do you have a video on finding the closest cell tower? I also have T Mobile home internet and also get 400mbps at home but only 50 in a remote location. Fine for Netflix but not to do my job. I’m considering Starlink but think they are price gauging and would def pause service alot

  11. I was going to hit the order button but I'm offgrid and that 75W froze me… thank you very much for your test. Do the previous gen was less greedy ?

  12. My Rural Satellite is facing North. Is installation of this 3rd Gen as simple as removing the old satellite and putting up this pole and satelite instead?
I'm not super comfortable drilling my roof otherwise.

  13. another advantage is if you're living in a country that has internet censorship. The government cannot censor your internet if you use starlink

  14. I live in the countryside of Tallahassee Florida and I HAVE to have internet to use my phone, internet, streaming etc. Currently have ViaSat, not pleased at all. I just ordered Starlink Gen 3 a few days ago. Hoping I will be pleased

  15. Without the automatic alignment, it isn't going to work well on my pole. In addition, the speeds were not any better then I get with Gen 2.
