  1. I feel like it is an unfair judgment to say this or that about influencers especially because when you come and watch them you are coming to watch something you like and them being influencers are going to sell you whatever product they consume because youtube is a business everyone is selling a service here so yall should just sit down.

  2. LIVING for the consistency 🥰

Side note…I wish you’d stop making Onezwa your hill. Onezwa is a very privileged hun and a lot of how she moves and the pace at which she moves is deeply rooted in that privilege.

If this chat is about hunger politics and the subsequent clumsy business decisions influencers/creators make as a result…Onezwa is neither the standard nor the poster child. Mind you…I LOVE her content 😍 but I’m not delusional or disillusioned. High key why I took offence to you calling us dumb b*tches over the most mind numbing exercise like scrolling over TikTok😫 you think I care to make homemade mozzarella cheese ever? No! But have I watched 50 videos on how to? Yes! Onezwa taught me how to catch an octopus then prepare it 3 different ways…first of all the privilege…but am I doing that ever? No! But did I sit there and watch? YUP! 😌

The influencer economy is a direct reflection of the overall health or lack thereof of a nation’s economy. If there’s a direct correlation between the crime rate and the unemployment/service delivery stats of a country…who’s paying attention to GRWM videos online? I’m being facetious but I’m not.

You have the right idea though…TikTok is a private entity and if South African creators organised and galvanised to put pressure on them to pay creators like they do everywhere else…but see hunger politics. Who do you think is in a privileged enough position to risk a bag with a brand to challenge the clock app to pay South African creators?

  3. Zambian here living in the Philippines 🇵🇭 I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel! We need such raw honest vidoes and you are completely right influencing doesn’t make money like that unless the influencer has a solid foundation & community. They are just selling a perception & delulu fake it till you make it type shit

  4. I root for SA influencers, but they let me down

But SA influencers dont know how to sell, but when last did you buy something because you saw an influencer using it

I understand why brands aren't giving campaigns or aren't willing to pay, Influencers will give a lazy promo

Brands care about conversion rates, and SA influencers aren't converting their numbers into sales

Look at the Revlon(CANDID/ Colorstay)campaign, the girls gave underwhelming videos

  5. SA influncers make the mistake of working hard to not look and live like their audience

They appeal of an influencer is relatablity, so the less you resemble your audience, the less you understand about how they think and how they buy, so you wouldn't know how to sell to them

This is why white corporations hire people who look like the markets they want to sell to

  6. I don't know about influencers anymore. They are so rude to their audience, lack accountability and are somehow the victims (because everyone supposedly attacks them). Anyway I knew this one influencer was not as comfortable as she pretended when she fought her followers over R40 subscriptions. They are giant billboards now, selling every chance they get. It's great for me because I watch less besides the fact that there are only so many times I can watch you make a spinach omelette and complain about your skin.

  7. Watching this after the sports minister released the COVID list of celebrity beneficiaries and I feel some type of way. Poor people (the lucky ones) received cheap quality food parcels and celebrities received at least R50 000 per person. The businesses are not worth mentioning because they rarely hire permanent staff. How is that fair?

  8. I don't know how much time, money and energy running this account takes from you; but i want you to know your voice is soo needed. We need more social commentary contextualising the Southy social media landscape. Thank you for your analysis
