South Africa: History, Geography, Economy & Culture

South Africa. Perhaps the first word that comes to mind is Apartheid, a system that enshrined in law racial discrimination at a national level. But those days are long gone now, and South Africa is attempting to reinvent itself as the “Rainbow Nation” of ethnic diversity. And there is so much more to South Africa. Having the most concentrated…

  1. 🇿🇦 Do you have an experience of South Africa? Just visited as a tourist? Or did you live there, or still live there? Please share your thoughts and moments of your time at the end of the African continent! 🇿🇦

  2. No never been but watching itchy boots old episodes… She did a wonderful job introducing you guys …. Few things in the history books aren’t good … but I strongly believe we should moved on …

  3. I think you severely undersold the importance of sport in the social and political landscape of this country. It is a country that goes through many ups and downs – and more often than not the 'ups' are accompanied by a unification behind sport: the 1995 Rugby World Cup (deescalating much of the tension between a newly unified country); the 2010 Soccer World Cup (marking a return of SA as a tourist hot-spot in Africa); and the recent 2023 Rugby World Cup (once again unifying a very diverse nation). On the topic of rugby – you could have mentioned that SA has won the world cup 4 times – more than any other country in the world (maybe a mention of the rugby greats like what you did for New Zealand?) I also think that you undersold the importance of agricultural exports of SA – especially exports to Europe – as we are located in the Southern hemisphere. Lastly, I would like to see you make more of an effort in pronouncing some indigenous names more accurately – this goes for all your videos. You do them a disservice by butchering the names – I know it is hard for people who speak different languages to pronounce things in foreign tongues, but I believe the nature of your "docco's" require you to make a very deliberate effort. Luckily the internet exists and there are many tools to help with this.

All this being said – I have immensely enjoyed your efforts and look forward to seeing more videos on other countries.

  4. This has been the only objective video on south africa so far. It's tragic that international countries care so little about us. We are literally the best case study about different cultures and also a good case study about nationalism. I ask you people of the world, what does it mean to be a nation?

  5. Don't visit if you want electricity to call your friens, go to a restaurant, etc. etc. Also, avoid the trains, train tracks are now disappearing so you'll most likely be stuck in the middle of nowhere for days. And the safari?? Should that not be Kalahari? The diamonds and gold was taken by the British, ,and cost of more than a 100 thousand lives. Greatest concentration of mineral worth? Can you prove that, no you can't. Segregate and discriminate? That was done by the Brits. You should brush up on your knowledge of history.

Anyway, the Great Trek 2.0 started a few decads ago, and Apartheid 2.0 is flourishing today!

The Dutch didn't establish a colony, they set up a small post for growing fresh fruit and vegetables for ship going to and from India. The BRITISH colonised SA.
