South Africa energy transition: Green energy to replace coal-fired power stations

Several coal-fired power stations in South Africa are scheduled to close in the next six years – part of its transition to green energy.
This means further job losses in a country with an already high unemployment rate.

Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa reports from Komati, South Africa.

Chris Yelland is managing director at the energy consultancy…

You know what is funny about is, our coal is being bought excessively by Europe 😂😂. The very countries that are telling us to use renewables. The West developed its economy through fossil fuels so why should South Africa ( a developing economy) stop using the resources it has in abundance?

The West is forcing us to cut off our lights for some climate change we dont fully believe

When these "first world counties go completely green and show us it can work properly, we should think about it.

The comments are kak funny. We still don't take anything seriously. That loss against Ireland (Rugby) was unexpected though.

Its crazy to me how the West, after decsdes of mass carbon emissions, now threatans other countries with the prospect of not cutting their emissions…

It's easy to tell everyone to cut emissions when you yourself abused the carbon footprint to build your own country to the point they can now cut emissions.

Its economic bullying and the ANC blidnly follows it.

If the ANC cares about emissions, they should invest in the constructions of new nuclear power stations, which produce basically zero emissions.

For those who do not live in RSA, the government is unable to provide stable power since 2008. In the last 5 years Solar had boomed so much due to Blackouts Stage 6 of 8 (12- 14 Hours )that its expected to be about 5.6 MW of unregistered solar and about 2.6 MW registered solar has been setup. Basically the middle to upper class & companies sorted themselves out and lifted the demand off of Eskom. The sad thing is businesses suffer from blackouts and in turn the people as a great deal of stores and factories closed due to black outs.
Basically making the gap to the poor and the rich even greater.

This change to green is just a joke that will result in more poor people suffering

I think South Africans need proof that renewables can reliably and AFFORDABLY provide energy before anything can be shut down.

It's not that we deny climate change, but people desperately needd reliable and affordable energy. We don't have that with cole, a 19th century technology. Now we are expected to believe wind and solar will solve everything??

Not convinced.

If you don't think nuclear is the answer, you're either a moron or a dum bass. Where does a majority of France and Japan get their energy from?

this is Africa. we do not get dictated to by the west. Why should we sit in the dark to supply you cheap coal

No renewable energy infrastructure is in place!!! Our country is being forced to do this by the Western world

Many South Africans, like myself, are strongly opposed to carbon emission targets set by the West, whose industrialisation undoubtedly had brought about the bulk of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

We want coal

So Komati was "phased out" while still operable while the country is in a 12 gigawatt shortfall. BECAUSE OF CLIMATE CHANGE!?!?!????? What happened to "just transition" where most of the burden fell on industrialized Western countries!?!?

The West is busy importing our coal but we have to decommission our plants? Those plants can be revived come on guys!

Chris does not understand process engineering. He says Nuclear is not a solution yet South Africa operates the only nuclear power plant in the continent. The only nuclear power plant that provides cheap electricity to Eskom. The only nuclear power plant that employs hundreds of people. It is a baseload and cleanest form of power. Renewables without hydrogen and natural gas won't replace coal fired power station. No intermittent source of energy that can power an aggressive industrial economy.

Everyone will see the light when we ban the use of coal/oil to make green energy like solar panels, wind turbines and hydrogen.
