Skin tone schism still haunts African-American community

As legend has it, if a person’s skin is darker than a brown paper bag, that person was unwanted in certain — to use the term of the era — Negro circles. Decades after the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the vestiges of slavery have produced an intractable climate where melanin still matters.

  1. Nah, this ain’t vestiges of slavery. Where Asa is from a lot of people into mixing …like she said that’s the future…in her mind. In the 7-5 a lot of Blackfolks WANT to be Black and actually LIKE dark skin. Why come to a very Black area with the idea in your mind everyone wants to race mix just cause of your situation. We don’t have to have children together to be civil and cordial. WE dont

  2. This is getting really old! I dont even see or hear this anymore! My daughter is light carmel and im dark brown. Love yourself and be happy. All shades are beautiful! I don't even here about colorism anymore!

Literally every family now has people with different skin tones! This topic is no longer news worthy!

  3. I’m tired of the topic it’s okay to make lighter skin feel not enough in our community or prove we are black enough. I feel like we have such beautiful shades. You take your insecurities out on those with lighter skin. It stars with self joy and understanding that we continue to hold on to racism that was created to divide our community. If you don’t learn to love who you see in the mirror don’t project it on others. We as a community have the most beautiful shades and we are still talking about this.

  4. This is a damn lie. that is not our get down. Thats why its a immigrant and a sistas in the thumbnail. Immigrantshave these cultural issues not us. Very pathetic. To attach their shit to us

  5. I'm very light-skinned. I will never allow any dark-skinned person to make me feel less black just because I happen to have less melanin. I think each person has to work on themself. I am very happy with my color. I look like the rest of my family. A lot of the bullying and hate comes for self hate.
