A devastating flood swept through Ondo town over the weekend, resulting in the destruction of property worth hundreds of millions of naira. The torrential downpour, which lasted several hours, severely impacted numerous areas of the community, leaving commuters stranded and residents in distress.

The flood affected several neighborhoods, including Ita-Nla, Lipakala Road, Oluwabamikole, Oke-Odunwo, Odojomu, Gani Fawehinmi, Bethlehem, Oke-Idera, Iranlowo, Ife Garage/St. Andrews, Ife Road, and Iluyemi. With homes, shops, and vehicles submerged, residents expressed frustration over the lack of adequate preventative measures, citing clogged drainage systems and canals as a significant contributing factor.

Local resident Kunle shared his concerns: “Shop owners and residents were hit hard by this flood. Thankfully, no one was swept away or injured.”

In response to the crisis, the Ondo State government announced an immediate evacuation of the affected areas, launching a rapid response effort to mitigate further damage. The government extended its sympathies to the people of Ondo City and the traditional ruler, the Osemawe of Ondo, assuring them that measures are being implemented to prevent future flooding as forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

Commissioner for Environment, Oyeniyi Oseni, conveyed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s directives to intensify the dredging of canals and impose sanctions on developers obstructing water pathways. In a statement, Oseni emphasized the need for proactive measures to safeguard the community against impending weather threats.
