Saving Ethiopia's Lake Hawass: University project hopes to restore lake

It’s considered the jewel of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley but it’s being drained of water.

Researchers say if nothing’s done to save Lake Hawasa, it could disappear.
But there are some who are striving to save it.

Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall reports from the Sidama region.

  1. The reason is all the drainage system of the town end at the lake, the industrial park use is as a west damp, the hospital use is as a west damp , bear factor use it as a damp…

  2. We have some many resources make us rich but we are busy by selfishness and war we are stiil blind i wishe we open our eyes and i wishe they look us our fake development in addis ababa we are fighting with poverty and but the government is busy to roads

  3. Thank you Al Jazzira for the coverage. I'm originally from Hawassa I grown up near to this beautiful lake, and I had strong relationship with the surrounding nature. The area have been under significant change since 2012, I think the rapid urbanization and the climate change are the key factors of the disturbance in the ecosystem. In addition to that traditional fishing practice caused substantial decrement on the biodiversity of the area. I hope all the actors including Hawassa university and the International allies will work and change the situation as possible.

  4. The industries which pollutes the lake should be held responsible for that. Corrupt politicians don't care. Sad to see how the birds suffer in the lake, the poor people losing their means of earning etc. Time to act people!

  5. Before 'man made' climate change there were no geological processes such as siltation or flooding. I'm bored of these flat earthers who seem to believe that the Earth has always been in a state of stasis.

  6. The government needs to invest in infrastructure than pocketing the money to himself and his friends! This is the result of Bad government. Ethiopia needs a Leader who is Educated, the current leader has NO clue.
