As a European what baffles me is the fact that the Bible Belt is the south part of the U.S., where slavery was promoted and kept!

Slavery is an atrocity. Sally did not have to return to America! In France she was a free woman, she would have been able to find employment! I do believe they did love each other. Unfortunately in the times they lived, they lived as they had to in order to be together .
I actually don’t think Jefferson slept with her, being only a quarter she probably wasn’t very black. But it still would have tainted her in his eyes. I think it was probably a brother of Jefferson, who by all accounts spent much time with the slaves and seemed to have a case of the jungle fever.
