The US is making a similar self-defense argument like Israel. The two occupiers have no right of self-defense. They are both hostile powers occupying territories. Why are Americans in Syria and Iraq? Why are they still there, even without the consent of the relevant governments? Just imagine Iraq decided to invade and occupy California and New York. Then the Iraqis claim self-defense when they are attacked by resistant groups composed of Americans in California and New York. This seems so absurd and even laughable, but is exactly what the US wants us to accept: it has a right of self-defense against resistant groups in territories it is occupying.
