Amid a crisis of widespread poverty and rampant corruption, almost 30 million South Africans are heading to the polls. The ruling ANC is under pressure and could even lose its majority for the first time in three decades. Fahmida Miller explains.

  1. My hunch is that the ANC will squeak by this time around, but, in the long run, the story might be different. The black population will not indefinitely be patient about the stark inequality between the white minority and the rest of the population. The ANC managed to build on a small layer of wealthy and middle-class black South Africans but this will not suffice in the long run. The South Africans are only starting to familiarize themselves with newly emerged political parties like the EFF and others. If they feel any of these newer parties have something better to offer, not just pie-in-the-sky promises, the ANC better watch out.🙂
