Ruger American Gen 2 Ranch Rifle – Initial Impressions

Ruger recenlty released their upgraded version of the Ruger American Ranch Rifle. My ranch rifle generation 2 is chambered in 5.56. In this initial impressions review I zero this rifle and seek to display the practical accuracy that I am capable of obtaining with this handsome firearm.

  1. The 5.56 has a 1:8 twist barrel that is more suited to heavy for caliber bullets (60-77g) if your running 55g ball/fmj then your groups will suffer a bit. The .223 has a 1:12 twist I believe and it will shoot the 55g much better. Also this only has a 16in barrel just like a AR and the .223 has a 20in barrel.

  2. Congrats, very nice rifle. Can't wait for us Canadians to get some of the Gen II's. If I may be so bold as to suggest, it would be preferable for you to distance your scope rings, one from the other. It is not necessary to have your rings so close to the scope turrets. By moving the front ring forward a little and moving the rear ring back some, you are creating a better craddle for the scope and lessening the overhang of the rear portion of your scope. That way, a bump or fall will lessen the change of bending that overhang portion of your scope. All the best and enjoy. Dave & The Girls

  3. Man someone needs to learn how to boarsight a rifle. I met a man who was in WW2 who fought in the German Airforce and he became an American who worked for NASA . He was building K98 rifles and my friend had him build a German replica sniper K98 . We took this rifle to the range and the guy who was in his 70's took the gun and sighted that scope by looking down the barrel with his eyes. We shot that rifle and fire lapped the barrel and the gun was just a few inches high at 100 yards but the windage was perfect. We easily got the gun to print groups … which was a big deal because the mount was how the windage was adjusted on the scope so it was perfectly built by this man's old aging eyes from a real German WW2 veteran!

  4. A great rifle with great upgrades alot of technology that Savage has been doing for awhile. Its gonna give some great competition for Savage. Love the fact you can use AR mags and the fluted barrel is awesome. Thanks for the review!

  5. Why do you think these groups are so great? I think it poor! I have 3 different guns in .223 and all shoot much better than that at 100 yards. One shoots .300 inches, one shoots .355 inches and the last shoots .421 inches. And my 308 shoots 3 inch groups at 400 yards.

  6. I'm just not a fan of spiral barrels. Great looking rifle otherwise. I have gen 1 in 7.62 x 39 very accurate considering steel case cheap euro ammo . I'm trying to get past the ugly barrel and get a 5.56 version. 😂 Thanks for sharing.
