Many Jews still, jokingly or no, curse Titus every holiday.
The history books have largely been unfair in their treatment of Domitian. He was a competent manager who balanced the treasury books, increased the amount of revenue flowing into the Roman coffers and increased the silver content in the denarius, (thus curbing inflation in the process). Prices were low under his watch and food and goods were plentiful for the hoi polloi.
Domitian is probably hated because he was hard on the Senators and the patricians and did not hesitate to execute any whom he found acting in an errant way. To punish him after his death, a Damnatio Memoriae was issued against him and his name and face were struck off coins and statues bearing his likeness were defaced. So also were temples with his inscriptions.
1:01:16 Titus had a fever when he died. But the obvious cause of death was cancer of the brain. An autopsy was carried out after his death in AD 81 and a tumor the size of a sparrow was removed from his brain.
Other circumstantial events during his lifetime also point to cancer as the cause of death. He often complained of hearing buzzing noises in his head and sharp pains, (as if being pecked by a bird). He suffered sweats, tiredness or fatigue during the last months of his life. Any modern physician even without examining the patient firsthand would have diagnosed cancer as a possible cause.
Another possibility mentioned or hinted at is that Domitian poisoned him. That notion can easily be discarded because even though Domitian desperately wanted to be emperor, he would not have risked the ire or wrath of the Romans and most importantly, the Praetorian Guard who idolized Titus to carry out such a heinous crime.
"I think I have become a god". Vespasian's last words while sitting on a toilet defecating.
54:00 Urine was also used as a mouthwash in ancient Roman times.
39:00 The siege and the destruction of the Second Temple of Solomon invoked hatred and anger from Hebrew scholars who many years later never ended a prayer without the incantation that damned Titus to hell, (May he rot in hell).
The Roman Historian, Tacitus does not hide his admiration and love for the Flavian dynasty in his annals,(they were his patrons) even though he accuses Domitian of poisoning his father in-law and Roman general, Agricola and causing his death.
What do you think the Flavian dynasty compares to other Roman emperors?
12:54 Vespasianβs conquest of Britain β a stroke of military genius or just another brutal expansion of Roman imperialism? And why do we still romanticize Roman conquests today?
