Considering how easy it would be to condemn or ridicule these customs, I think the narrator was very non-condemnatory or negative while explaining these Roma customs. While odd they may seem to non-Romas, who is to say that these marriages aren't just as successful and happy as those in the western lands of Europe? Statistics in the US say that half of American marriages fail. I've lived among Romas and see how badly they are treated overall.
