A flood has wreaked havoc at the University of Ibadan, destroying property worth millions of naira in Awo Hall, one of the institution's hostels. The flooding, which occurred on Friday, has left many students in distress as their belongings were severely damaged.

Reports indicate that Blocks A, B, and C of the hostel were the most affected, with approximately 16 rooms on the underground floor completely submerged. Personal belongings, including important documents, books, laptops, foodstuffs, and other valuables, were seen floating in the water.

The incident has been confirmed by the Students’ Union (SU), which issued a statement signed by President Bolaji Aweda and Public Relations Officer Olumide Omotayo. The union has alerted university management about the situation, prompting the administration to take immediate action.

In response, the university management directed the Works and Maintenance Department along with the University Student Lodgings Bureau (USLB) to assess the damage and implement solutions. The SU assured affected students that measures were being put in place for their support.

“The Students’ Union commiserates with the residents of Awo Hall, particularly those in Blocks A, B, and C, who have been impacted by the recent flooding. We understand the distress this has caused and want to reassure the residents that the Union is actively involved in addressing the situation,” the statement read.

To alleviate the immediate challenges faced by the affected students, the hall management, through the hall warden, has approved the temporary relocation of residents to other rooms and blocks within the hostel.

The Students’ Union also emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal and maintaining clear drainage systems to prevent future flooding incidents. They expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of all students as they work towards resolving the crisis.
