I find this very Ironic that US intervention destabilised El Salvador in the first place (Reagan 1980’s). Now everyone here is outraged when the repercussions come back to haunt them!
I think the reason it worked in El Salvador is because of how densely populated it is, and how highly social. It is a lot better to identify gang members and find criminals when everyone knows everyone, especially criminals that flaunt their criminality publicly. More importantly, I think a police officer is a lot more statistically effective when he is close to more people, as in, a police officer in a rural american town can't exert much influence on the land around him, but in a densely populated country the police officer cover alot more people under his "influence" of protection – A salvadoran
The interesting thing is the guy is originally from Palestine Jerusalem and he is a Muslim and he is the most loved ruler in the latin world.

I had my car broken into while travelling and all my personal belongings stolen. The police didn't even bother caring or attending, they just told me to file an insurance claim. The new method of taking care of things is to deal with it yourself, gone are the days of the police caring that your personal property was violated.
