Historically, Biblical characters were portrayed by whites because, basically, our culture was white. People in Europe could identify with a man they recognised. No one would stop other cultures portraying biblical characters with their skin colours because they would identify with that.

Can I just say on the subject of Jesus Christ? I’m 69 years old and as a child I was taught in religious studies that Jesus was NOT white. Taken into account the part of the world he came from. And that the pictures that depict him as white were a sign of the times, and were wrong.

If you mess with historical portrayals then some people will get confused. Changing the race of a fictional character is one thing (I do believe it has to make sense) but a real life person whom we know what they looked like? No, stop it. Tell the stories correctly and don't stick in token diversity just to make yourselves (TV/ movies) look good. Its not a pat on the back to make a movie about a historical figure and then change their race, falsify historical events for dramatic effect moving completely away from the facts.
