Operation Dudula blocks foreign spaza shop owners from registration

Angry Soweto residents and Operation Dudula members have blocked foreign spaza shop owners who wanted to register their businesses from doing so. The residents claim President Cyril Ramaphosa didn’t take “decisive action” on his inclusion of foreign spaza shop owners. Lumka Bekindawo has more.

There are thousands of SPAZA shops. This doesn't only apply to foreigners. These actions are illegal by dudula. ALL SPAZA SHOPS must be registered. None of the protesters are qualified to do the work of police or government officials. Spaza shops are part of the informal sector and as such some rules of registering a business do not apply as in becoming registered under CIPA as a company. Additionally, who determines who is a foreigner or not? If a person has valid documentation then they fall under different rules. Let government do it's job.

So the problem was not lack of government control on these shops the problem is that they just don't want others Africans to open businesses.

The problem is that people think that the government is just doing things. There is a Supreme Court case which allows foreigners even those that seek asylums to register and/ or renew business licenses. The government can go against the court, dudula must go and appeal that case at the constitutional court.
