Weirdly enough, unlike English/British actors, I think French actors are more inspired by Hollywood. Their Nouvelle Vague style was a sort of ironic purposely-OTT version of that; the gangster flicks were based on the likes of Bogart; their comedies are considerably more screwball, like in the US. Art flicks from France aren't too dissimilar from arty US films.
