  1. My freshman yr of high school our teacher had this wall with a pouch for each student & she told us we’d all get extra credit if we put our phones in them each day. My pouch was truly the only empty one out of the 30 students 😂😭 I had to awkwardly go up to her and tell her I didn’t have one to put in

The truth was, I didn’t rly need or want a phone at the time – but it was just so embarrassing not to have one to my 14 yr old brain 🤦‍♀️

  2. My concerns for my grand kids not having a phone is every school shooter or other disaster the kids call their parents and let them know of the problem. Can't rely completely on the teachers, or even the cops as they have waited to go in and kids lost their lives. In addition, many times family or parents helped get kids out through windows and locked doors. Don't leave these with hope, try leaving your phone every day. Each class can have a place to lay all phones down coming into class and pick up when leaving. This will keep them focused in class and if a disaster happens their phones are all on the teachers desk.

  3. My kids were the only ones not to have cell phones in Jr high. They got them at 15, when they got farm jobs, and needed to call for picking up. They are adults now, and thank me for waiting to give them cellphones and social media!

  4. I don't think young kids need their own phones. But they should have guided access to computers. They are a part of life and such a great resource. 14 seems too old in my opinion for your first smartphone though. 10 makes sense in my opinion since its the year kids generally start being briefed and prepared for secondary school, for going on public transport by themselves and generally being more independent and responsible. Using tech by yourself before you can read means you can't really navigate it beyond specific operations you've been taught or being fed the algorithm. Its addictive too. But Ooder kids shouldn't be forced to miss out on social media just because some people think its fine to hand kids technology without previously talking to them about boundaries and internet safety. Obviously this doesnt mean they should always have it on hand. Like in the classroom.

  5. My oldest girl didn't get a phone until her senior year. My two younger girls don't have phones in 10th and 8th grade. I let them know the dangers of the cell phones and how people can abuse them outside of school. Also that Zuc doesn't let his kids have social media.

  6. Cellphones for the sole purpose of making calls are awesome for keeping in touch with your kid in case of emergency. Just buy them a cheap one that is modeled after those old ones where you can run like snake or something for entertainment and it's fine. They can have the smartphone with all the gadgets in their free time.

  7. Yeah, I grew up in the “if your friends jumped off a bridge would you?” World – so the “I’m the only one” doesn’t work on me.

Social media is the worst thing you can give your children.

  8. I thought my lil QWERTY tracphone was the coolest as a kid. No internet access. And my dad had the peace of mind that I could reach him if I needed anything. Idk why people need to give smart phones with whole phone lines and internet access to kids when that's still an option!

  9. Finally cuz my son won't stop asking for one and copping a attitude about it I couldn't believe walking into my old elementary with kids with iPhone we had a pay phone when I was a kid and beepers

  10. At least until they lose their milk teeth all childrwn should be in environments free of ANY media except their own people's story, dress, music and art and social customs and norms. After that they can individuate and be among other groups with different norms and values and not be shook at all.

  11. I have to disagree. I don’t think phones or headphones are the issue. I think it’s the parents that don’t know how to regulate or manage their kids screen time. A lot of parents give their kids a phone at a young age and don’t teach them how to manage their time or show them that phones are not a replacement for real interaction. Growing up I had a little Nokia but I wasn’t addicted to my phone, nor was I using it in class unless told by my teacher. My school knew they could never get rid of phones, so instead they worked WITH phones. We could take pictures of the notes on the board and study them, listen to music with our own headphones during independent work to help focus and keep the room quiet, while also feeling safe in case a shooting happens and I can contact my parents immediately. This goes hand in hand with addiction. The drug itself is not the problem, it’s our own lack of emotional regulation and desire to fill a void. If we can first fix the internal problems, most external problems will be at ease or easier to tackle.

  12. My 8 and 11 year olds have Gabb watches. No cameras. No access to the internet. 25 preselected numbers they can call. Its all they need right now.

  13. This isn’t going to work, I was exposed to porn and all that stuff when I was 8 and this was like 2011. It’s pretty much impossible to raise a kid outside of the internet without severely stunting them and literally any internet access will mean them being exposed to terrible stuff. It is a complete lose lose situation. And with this idea there’s too many terrible parents that won’t do that which ruins the whole thing.
