There is no concept of nation states in islam.

A muslim can do jihad to protect oppressed weak non muslim or even women if she is going through in justice.
Jihad is not attacking someone to gain power or increase your wealth or power by using Allah's name
Also its not for any country or nation.
Your country can also be wrong
You are even ordered to stand against your own people,tribe, nation if they are doing anything wrong
This is what Jihad means.
It's a fight for justice, oppressed, and weak.
There are 3 types of jihad
One is by force if you are powerful
If not than wealth if you have resources and if not
Speak against any evil
It's jihad as well.
An honest journalist is also doing jihad if he is speaking against evil and in favour of oppressed

The term jihad comes from root of j -h-d which means to strive or to struggle
According to Hadith there are types of jihad
1.greater jihad is refer to the internal struggle against ons’s ego , desire and negative inclination
2. Lesser Jihad (Jihad al Asgar – this pertain to external effort , which can include defensive combat under strict ethical guidance
