I believe he is still in the situation because he is depressed and was "spiritually manipulated." Phrankleen is right too many years of his life was wasted in this toxic environment. He just has to pick up the pieces now and start over. He probably also should look about getting therapy!

How can an African man be like this? No way in hell can an African MAN be like this for 33YEARS, UNLESS he is under spiritual manipulation right from the time he saw her. It is like a spider catching her prey and entrapping them forever. Since the spider does not devour you immediately she takes her time to fatten you up so the prey becomes juicy and succulent and ready for harvest. NO AFRICAN MAN will EVER stay in a marriage because of the kids this is only an African woman's belief. NO AFRICAN MAN will ever sleep on the couch in a woman's house let alone his own house for 5 YEARS. It is IMPOSSIBLE unless he is waiting for his papers so he can leave the next day after getting his complete papers. You can see from the story there is no friend or family members except for the mother that was not even allowed to stay under the same roof with her. IF and only IF a man turned out like this, is it not his mother or family or friends that would give different kinds of advice but this man has no such luck, why?
