Shawshank redemption was about a wife murderer who continued his criminal activity through the smokescreen of his fraud being committed for the warden
Providing himself cover by exposing the warden as the fraudster behind the missing funds.
Amazing movie. My God, when Andy didn’t come out of his cell, my wife and I were just “No!!!” Cause that’s a long damn movie for a depressing end. And then it snowballed, and snowballed and we were laughing and crying.

I saw it in theaters with only a handful of people. We all were discussing it after and were curious of what just happened. How can a movie THIS amazing be so unknown? It’s like we needed confirmation from each other of what we just watched. Saw it again the next night to confirm. Everyone was into Forrest Gump.

Here in Brasil it was called "Um sonho de Liberdade" wich would translate as "A Dream of Freedom" so it was an immediate success.

I saw one video essay say that it flopped because of how it humanised prisoners at a very anti-prisoner time. In fact, the heinous 1994 crime bill was passed 10 days before the film was released and corporate media like the NYT and LA Times criticised it for its humanisation of prisoners.

What he is saying is even more impactful if you know that the title was "simplified" for the movie.
The title that Stephen King gave to the novella was: "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption".
Time was really a friend to this movie, cuz now everyone knows it.
