Medea with Sophie Okonedo & Ben Daniels – review and photos
Paul Seven Lewis reviews a powerhouse production of the classic play about a woman seeking revenge on her husband in a male-dominated society. Dominic Cooke directs powerful performances from Sophie Okonedo and Ben Daniels but what does the play, adapted by Robinson Jeffers, have to say to a modern audience?

Does anyone know where I could watch this online ? I’d absolutely love to write about this for an essay ( I’m a drama student) but it’s not showing anymore:(
I have seen better Medea performances, in my opinion the actress did not express Medea's emotions, being loud an cry does not meen you perform well. Medea was far more mistterious, free, crazy and powerful as character of this play. So I cant agree that this play is 4 star out of 5; I would say its not even 1.
This was probably my favourite play that I have ever watched. I think you're review really does it justice
Going to see the production tonight so will let you know what I think. Not exactly uplifting but I’m sure the acting will carry the production.
So happy to have found your channel!!
You can't tell ANYTHING about a show from the advertising. Certainly the posters, but even online it's so its incredibly poor sometimes you can't see the name or venue location of the show anywhere let alone a clue as to the plot.
You're doing an incredible job, thank you! I may well book for this soon.
I want to thank you for this review, Paul. I'd slightly tuned out of what is currently on in/around the fringes of the West-End, so wasn't entirely aware of this production.
I was travelling down to London last midweek to catch a matinee of Standing at the Skies Edge at the NT, and after watching this review and learning of the lean 90 minute run time (allowing me to still make the last train home to the Midlands) I took a last-minute punt on booking Medea for the evening.
I was fortunate enough to be given a seat upgrade, moving me from the upper balcony to 3rd row stalls, within errant sweat and saliva distance of these intense performances. I can only echo your accolades for this deceptively simplistic and highly gripping production. I was blown away by the unflinching believability of it all, and left grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this slice of theatrical brilliance (and a first visit to Soho Place Theatre).
Thank you again for providing the inspiration! – Ian.
The play must have moved you deeply, this is one of your most powerful descriptions on this chennel. Thanks again for all this, I cannot emphasize enough how valuable this is for us (few, sigh) that follow your reviews!
