Well economy is linked to politics, up to a point, probably some 1/4, the rest is irrelevant for economy. 1) Depleted resources (or highly pollutant ones in case of energy) requires imports Imports are subject to market economy, not to politics; 2) Very high social discrepancies and very high incomes for few means a society that is not performant, so China (or another "fresh" booming economy) will fill the gap; 3) Ghosts and comfort creates dependencies and, since the end of WW2 the times are under a continuous shadow of war (no real peace – and definitely no cooperation "outside the club", – no war, luckily, except this localized conflict where Ukraine is "defending" Europe if one would believe in this poor propaganda). To those who like the game of ghosts, then there is a need to invest some… much money into the military industrial complex in the detriment or even sacrificing the most important domains of social and economic life.

Macron is a brilliant man. He sees into the future and thinks long run. He is not a politician but rather a statesman, a leader. They should have listened to him back in 2017 when he argued for a European army. He justly wants the EU to further integrate into a real federation.
